Looking at getting an SL1 or T5 as a starter camera. Thoughts?

I've heard good things about the SL1 from Canon shooters, mainly because of the size and overall IQ.

However, if you're looking for a good deal, Canon has refurbished T5's with a kit lens on sale right now for $199. I actually bought a refurbished SX50 from them this past summer and it looked brand new when I got it and has performed flawlessly.

If you want something to learn on, I'd buy it without hesitation.

Thanks. I bought the SL1 a few days ago. After doing a lot of reading and speaking with a few pro photographer friends I learned that the SL1, T5, and T5i all take the same quality shots because internally they are the same camera just with different hardware features. I was able to pick up a brand new SL1 with a lens on eBay for $200 after some credit I had saved up. So far I love it. If I remember right, a major negative of the T5 for me out of the 3 was that the T5 didn't have an external mic input. The T5i and Sl1 have one which I don't need right now but I will make good use of it in the future.

@GoldenGlove @TruLifeLens what camera/s do you use? Would it make sense to get a HD 4K videocam and just do screenshots from there or a DSLR with videocapture features?
I shoot with a Sony A6000. If you're going to be doing more recording, then get a videocamera.

:yeshrug:

I don't know how well the screenshot thing would look compared to just having a dedicated camera for still shots tho.
