I'm far from a pro and just recently got into photography beyond what was possible with the camera on my iPhone. With that said, first of all, I would determine a budget. Once you figure out how much you'd be wiling to pay and what you'll be shooting primarily while you learn photography, then I can throw some suggestions out there.
But in the meantime, search YouTube for videos on photo composition. In my opinion, that's the most important lesson for beginners.
