That's not how it works, they can give him a big signing bonus and defer that amount over the life of the contract. So, they could offer him 15 milly bonus, 5 yr contract, they can defer the 15 over 5 years and get away with giving him like a 1.5 MM base salary this year. Al Davis did that a lot this past decade and that's why we were in cap hell with dead money from players who were released.

32. Oakland Raiders (mock trade from Seattle) -- Fresno State QB Derek Carr: Oakland moves up and Seattle drops to second round, No. 36 overall. The Raiders need to get into the bottom of the first round before the draft breaks for the night, giving a number of teams a chance to position themselves for a QB like Carr or Bridgewater in the second round. Also, getting Carr in this spot gives the Raiders an extra year to develop him -- they can sign him to an extra year and have an option to hold him for a fifth.

Seems like this would be a nice 1st round for us, but if Bridgewater really slides to the end of the 1st and we pass on him.
