Training Camp Observations: Aug. 4, 2017
A couple of injury updates from todays practice: wide receiver Amari Cooper was once again just an observer today, and safety Obi Melifonwu was nowhere to be found. No updates on either player, as the Raiders area always quiet on that. Tackle David Sharpe also wasn't practicing after coming up gimpy yesterday.
Here's some updates from today:
-- With Cooper out, receiver KJ Brent stepped got more reps with the starting offense. Brent took advantage of the added time, catching a nice touchdown reception from Carr and a couple of more tough catches over the middle. Brent has developed nicely and looks like he may get a roster spot.
-- We haven't seen much from rookie running back Elijah Hood but that changed on Friday. Hood had a nice run early in practice when he waited patiently behind his blockers and found a hole late for a decent gain. Hook then made the play of the day when he found a nice crease up the middle and broke free for a 90-yard gain, outrunning the defense all the way to the end zone.
-- The team saw its first camp scuffle of the year when TJ Carrie and Michael Crabtree got into it. Crabtree threw Carrie to the ground, who ended up kicking upwards at Crabtree. We've seen better fights, but it was the first one of the year nonetheless.
-- Cornerback Dexter McDonald has impressed me this camp. He continues to make plays and be in a position to defend his receiver, and that continued on Friday. McDonald drew comparisons to Champ Bailey out of the draft, for what that's worth.
-- Cordarrelle Patterson is rooming with backup quarterback EJ Manuel for camp and it's showing as their chemistry has turned into big plays on the field. Patterson has displayed receiver skills necessary to be more than just a return man for this team.
-- Rough day for rookie tight end Pharaoh Brown. Brown dropped a sure touchdown in the back of the end zone, and then broke free from a linebacker later to have the ball clank off his hands again. He'll need to turn it around quickly.
-- Rookie and third-round pick Eddie Vanderdoes had a nice swim move against Denver Kirkland and Rodney Hudson to sack Carr. He has also been impressive this camp.
-- Speaking of Kirkland, he stepped in at the left guard spot for Kelechi Osemele for a while towards the end of practice. Shouldn't be a concern, as Osemele stayed on the sideline and was cheering on his teammates. Was likely just giving his time off as the coaches like to play around with combinations early in camp.
-- Defense won the day, especially on three consecutive plays: After Brown's drop that I mentioned earlier, safety Reggie Nelson intercepted Carr on a batted ball, and then the next play James Cowser forced a fumble on running back DeAndre Washington.
