Gaming is going to be an expensive hobby. Nintendo is supposed to be the cheap alternative to the other two. So if $500 the best they can do then I wouldn't be surprised if the PS6 is close to $1000.

The next gen consoles won't release until 2029/2030 because a $1000 won't sell well at all.
