Defense seems to really be leaning heavily on "suicide by citizens arrest" which is fukking bonkers. They are positioning Travis as a law trained patriot following proper police procedures in the course of a citizens arrest...I'm betting he claims he felt his "life was threatened" at some point.
yeah dumb strategy, should've abandoned the whole citizens arrest angle entirely, you can't make a citizens arrest because you saw somebody jogging. and it does not give you authority to make a terry stop to investigate someone you suspect of having commited a crime. You have to flat out witness the crime with own eyes, then you can make a citizens arrest. Not only did they not witness a crime, but a crime wasn't even commited, they tried to use the footage of him in the construction house, but the home owner admitted nothing was taken and its not trespassing unless signs are posted. and didn't even see him in the house themselves so even if he did steal something they still wouldn't have legally within their authority to make a citizens arrest.
This was just straight chasing someone down, abducting them and killing them. open and shut
