Fitgerald Toussint suspended indefinitely
The Saline Police Department arrested University of Michigan starting running back Fitzgerald Toussaint in Ann Arbor Saturday night on charges of operating a vehicle while impaired, according to Detective Don Lupi.
Saline Police arrested Toussaint at approximately 11:45 p.m. while working in downtown Ann Arbor on drunk driving detail, Lupi said.
Saline Police and other Washtenaw County law enforcement agencies participate in a joint drunk driving detail that allows out-of-jurisdiction arrests.
Police made the stop for a traffic violation, Lupi said. A breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol content above the legal limit of .08, Lupi said. The arrest took place without incident, he said.
Toussaint was arrested and lodged at the Saline Police Department until sober, according to Lupi. Lupi said police are forwarding the case to the Washtenaw County prosecutor's office. Arraignment details are not yet available.
Toussaint, a junior from Youngstown, OH, started in 11 of Michigan's 12 games last year, rushing for 1,041 yards and eight touch downson 187 carries. He set a career high by rushing for 192 yards at Illinois Nov. 12.
In a statement released to Patch, University of Michigan football head coach Brady Hoke said Toussaint has been suspended as a result of the incident.
"Fitz made a poor decision and has been suspended indefinitely because of that action," Hoke said. "There are expectations that come with being a football student-athlete at the University of Michigan and those responsibilities were not met in this instance. We will use this as an opportunity to educate Fitz and make sure he understands the high standards that we have established within our program."
