In the past there have been reports of spring heroes that have failed to produce in fall. Some of those posts came from me, but I can only pass on what I see. Keep in mind this is just an opinion.
1) Zach Gentry --- I put him on the list because UM is deep at the TE position. Look for Zach to separate himself this spring. He has gained the necessary strength while keeping (some say improved) his speed. He could progress into a high NFL draft pick. Also although fans may not see it in spring, expect UM to find different ways of using Zach in fall, including using him in slot.
2) Mike Dwumfour --- Mike came to UM with injury issues and those issues continued up until this off-season. He is finally healthy and has really worked to a point where he is going to compete for a starting position this fall. He has the quickest "first step" of all the DTs and at times they compare his ability to Hurst. He just needs to stay healthy but if he does I think we see much more out of Mike this spring and fall.
3) Drew Singleton --- much like Dwumfour above came to UM with some injury issues. redshirted, and now is completely healthy. There may not be a better overall athlete on the defensive side. Now it just a matter of where does he play, how do coaches fit him in the scheme, and getting him on the field. But if the old saying works---"get the best athletes on the field"--Drew is going to get a bunch of snaps.
4) Kwitty Paye --- if you listen to the coaches talk they will tell you they would love to have a whole roster filled with players like Paye and Mason. Paye is really emerging and might have the "strongest leg drive" of any of our DLs.
5) Deron Irvin-Bey --- someone who has needed a ton of development, has moved inside, and is making progress. Irvin-Bey is a big kid and is going to supply much needed depth at DT. He already is going to be effective rushing the passer as a DT. He will be working on stopping the run this spring. But he is a riser. A good spring could enhance his chances.
6) Chuck Filiaga --- 1) Filiaga is a perfect example of many of our OL prospects. Good size and decent upper body strength but lacked necessary leg strength and ability to drive people off the ball. The new S&C program is changing that overall weakness, and Filiaga is going to be a big benefactor of that approach. 2) Coaches almost took his redshirt off last yr. He made enough progress that coaches felt he was ready. And he has practiced at LT. In first 2 practices, Filiaga played with the 1s at LT. It is not clear where new OL coaches will feel Filiaga fits. UM has enough size and talent upcoming on OL. They just need to develop. Hopefully new approach will show big dividends.
7) Oliver Martin --- he could make major strides this spring. Perry is out and production from that position has been average at best. Martin by far has the most ability. He's a hard working, somewhat quiet kid who really wants to play. Keep an eye on him.
8) Jaylen Kelly-Powell, Brad Hawkins --- I put them together because the plans are this spring that both will compete at safety. Both were moved around last yr, and it is believed that safety is the best position for both. I also think (personal opinion) that, despite Coach Brown's comments, they will utilize the safeties different than they did a year ago. If they do, both will benefit because they are an upgrade from our existing safeties who return. Not saying they end up starting, but they will be in the mix and competition is what spring is all about.
9) Ruiz --- he is not only going to be a starter, but he is emerging as the leader on the OL. He wants to play OC and has done everything to make sure he wins that spot. Ruiz is a very hard worker and other players have taken notice.
10) Nico Collins --- not saying he is going to pass up Black or Peoples-Jones, but UM needs other WRs to step up. Crawford has been very inconsistent. Collins' ability to grab that #3 spot would be huge. One thing very noticeable -- Collins is a big kid. He towers over everyone. He looks almost as tall as Gentry. Collins came from Alabama and had some adjusting to do in college but seems to be much more comfortable now. I expect a big spring from him.
That is 10. I could of mentioned 10+ more. I know many are going to say its spring practice and we have heard good reports before. Some of those came from me, so guilty as charged. But there does seem to be a very different vibe with the existing S&C program. I cannot remember when UM goes into a spring with so many talented athletic players, especially on defense.
Last comment --- JH really had a bad yr. He knows he has to coach much better, and he has made some changes. I think you will see some changes on the offensive side of the ball. Do not get discouraged if you don't see a ton of changes when you watch spring game. But by kick-off in Sept, I think changes will be more obvious. I guess we will all see if those changes work.
