NEW POST --- updated info from recent practices.

1) OL --- Don't read anything into this. They constantly move people around. I would pay more attention to starters at the spring game. However, last 2 practices:

LT --- JBB. He moved over from RT
RT --- Runyan has made a move and coaches like his athleticism.
Interior --- Bredeson, Ruiz, Owenu. Spanelilis is first guy in.

2) Starting DL--- Gary, Solomon, (Mone-Dwufour alternate), Winovich
Starting LB --- Gil, Bush, Hudson
When they go into 3 man front --- Mone-Dwumfour comes out. Uche comes in a LB. Couple times they played a LB group of Singleton, Uche, Ross, Hudson.

3) Thomas has played with 1's alternating with Long

4) Higdon seems to have become #1 RB.

5) Defense is trying new looks. Example: in passing situations, Paye and Winovich played DE. Gary moved to inside but played somewhat of a "rover"

6) For those who were hoping Metellus would go away, he is back and starting at safety. He looks like he really put in some time in off-season.

7) Peoples-Jones, Black, Collins alternate with 1's.

8) Gentry and Eubanks line up in slot quite a bit

9) There was a screen pass sighting in practice

10) Still early, but no doubt JH is very engaged with QBs and offense this yr.

On the injury front, Kareem Walker has joined a few that are dinged up. He appears to have an ankle injury. The severity is unknown. However, that has opened up RB3 competition. Ambry Thomas has shown off his talent in the early going in the secondary.

McElwain and Warriner have made their presence known. McElwain is very intense as he was getting after the WR group (mostly positive) and Warriner has been chewing up the OL. JKP has stood out along with a few others like Milton. Joe doesn't look or act like a true Freshman.

There were 4 guys that ran with 1's consistently so far on defense (Gary, Chase, K. Hudson, and Hill). On the offensive side of the ball there were just too many players getting reps to really get a feel other than Bredeson, Ruiz, Onwenu, and DPJ.

In the past there have been reports of spring heroes that have failed to produce in fall. Some of those posts came from me, but I can only pass on what I see. Keep in mind this is just an opinion.

1) Zach Gentry --- I put him on the list because UM is deep at the TE position. Look for Zach to separate himself this spring. He has gained the necessary strength while keeping (some say improved) his speed. He could progress into a high NFL draft pick. Also although fans may not see it in spring, expect UM to find different ways of using Zach in fall, including using him in slot.

2) Mike Dwumfour --- Mike came to UM with injury issues and those issues continued up until this off-season. He is finally healthy and has really worked to a point where he is going to compete for a starting position this fall. He has the quickest "first step" of all the DTs and at times they compare his ability to Hurst. He just needs to stay healthy but if he does I think we see much more out of Mike this spring and fall.

3) Drew Singleton --- much like Dwumfour above came to UM with some injury issues. redshirted, and now is completely healthy. There may not be a better overall athlete on the defensive side. Now it just a matter of where does he play, how do coaches fit him in the scheme, and getting him on the field. But if the old saying works---"get the best athletes on the field"--Drew is going to get a bunch of snaps.

4) Kwitty Paye --- if you listen to the coaches talk they will tell you they would love to have a whole roster filled with players like Paye and Mason. Paye is really emerging and might have the "strongest leg drive" of any of our DLs.

5) Deron Irvin-Bey --- someone who has needed a ton of development, has moved inside, and is making progress. Irvin-Bey is a big kid and is going to supply much needed depth at DT. He already is going to be effective rushing the passer as a DT. He will be working on stopping the run this spring. But he is a riser. A good spring could enhance his chances.

6) Chuck Filiaga --- 1) Filiaga is a perfect example of many of our OL prospects. Good size and decent upper body strength but lacked necessary leg strength and ability to drive people off the ball. The new S&C program is changing that overall weakness, and Filiaga is going to be a big benefactor of that approach. 2) Coaches almost took his redshirt off last yr. He made enough progress that coaches felt he was ready. And he has practiced at LT. In first 2 practices, Filiaga played with the 1s at LT. It is not clear where new OL coaches will feel Filiaga fits. UM has enough size and talent upcoming on OL. They just need to develop. Hopefully new approach will show big dividends.

7) Oliver Martin --- he could make major strides this spring. Perry is out and production from that position has been average at best. Martin by far has the most ability. He's a hard working, somewhat quiet kid who really wants to play. Keep an eye on him.

8) Jaylen Kelly-Powell, Brad Hawkins --- I put them together because the plans are this spring that both will compete at safety. Both were moved around last yr, and it is believed that safety is the best position for both. I also think (personal opinion) that, despite Coach Brown's comments, they will utilize the safeties different than they did a year ago. If they do, both will benefit because they are an upgrade from our existing safeties who return. Not saying they end up starting, but they will be in the mix and competition is what spring is all about.

9) Ruiz --- he is not only going to be a starter, but he is emerging as the leader on the OL. He wants to play OC and has done everything to make sure he wins that spot. Ruiz is a very hard worker and other players have taken notice.

10) Nico Collins --- not saying he is going to pass up Black or Peoples-Jones, but UM needs other WRs to step up. Crawford has been very inconsistent. Collins' ability to grab that #3 spot would be huge. One thing very noticeable -- Collins is a big kid. He towers over everyone. He looks almost as tall as Gentry. Collins came from Alabama and had some adjusting to do in college but seems to be much more comfortable now. I expect a big spring from him.

That is 10. I could of mentioned 10+ more. I know many are going to say its spring practice and we have heard good reports before. Some of those came from me, so guilty as charged. But there does seem to be a very different vibe with the existing S&C program. I cannot remember when UM goes into a spring with so many talented athletic players, especially on defense.

Last comment --- JH really had a bad yr. He knows he has to coach much better, and he has made some changes. I think you will see some changes on the offensive side of the ball. Do not get discouraged if you don't see a ton of changes when you watch spring game. But by kick-off in Sept, I think changes will be more obvious. I guess we will all see if those changes work.
Some of my favorite all-time spring observations.

1) Jeremy LeSeur --- to this day I have never seen a frosh with more fluid athletic talent than Jeremy. I really thought he was going to be one of the all-time greats at UM. And he did start at CB his frosh yr, then injured his knee. Was never the same. But man was he impressive that spring.

2) Steve Schilling --- a highly recruited player out of Washington. Word is he was going to be an example of our new S&C program with the focus not on size or weight but athleticism and quickness. He walked out for the first spring practice, and he could not of weighed more than 270 lbs although he was listed at 300. He looked like a LB, and we all looked at each other and knew we were in big trouble.

3) Coach Dews --- the worst college coach I have ever been around. At the first practice he was all over the WRs, calling them every name in the book. Some I cannot repeat on the board. After practice a couple HS coaches asked him to explain what the WRs did wrong in order to be yelled at like that. He said "nothing. These are college kids. They need to be talked to like that."

4) Tony Gibson --- RR's best friend. At coaches clinic he was doing a presentation on CB play. He had to put a trash can next to him for the spit from the snuff he had in his mouth during the presentation

5) Carlos Brown --- in one scrimmage he must have had 800 yds offense by himself. He ran 5 plays of over 80 yds on simple RB passes for touchdowns. RR was so excited, not understanding that our defense was that bad.

6) First practice, RR singled out Boren in front of Lloyd Carr and called him a "country club brat" that had been babied by previous staff. Carr was right there. Carr walked off. Boren transferred. People wanted to know why Carr never went to practice. People at that practice knew why.

7) When Lewan was at UM, coaches basically allowed him to play in spring whenever he wanted. He would play a snap then just go to sideline. It did not matter if he played. He was our best OL and a veteran. But others on the team saw this, and it did not send a great message.

8) In almost every case, the 5 OLs who started in spring also started in fall. I cannot remember a case when this did not happen.

9) Jake Butt was one of the best spring players I have ever seen.

10) The first time I saw Taco I thought it was impossible for a frosh to be that tall and athletic. He had 3 sacks the first practice in spring.

11) My all-time favorite --- at the coaches clinic when HS coaches were allowed to watch practices. It was RR's first yr, so there were a ton of coaches there curious of the program. On Sat. there was suppose to be a big scrimmage. On Thurs the team was having a mini-scrimmage and RR blew the whistle and really went after the defense, calling them names and telling them they were not physical enough. He really went after the DL. The very next play they ran a QB read option and Jason Kates killed Threet. RR went crazy that he hit him too hard. Everyone there just looked at each other. The very next play the back-up QB got hurt, so they basically had to scrimmage on Sat without any QBs in front of all the HS coaches.

Far as I'm concerned this is make or break for Harbaugh this year. Don't give a damn how tough the schedule is. He has his QB, 2 5 star receivers, a 1,000 yard back in Higdon and what should be a top 10 defense.

Fix the fukking line, and beat your rivals. You know like Beilein does on a consistent basis with inferior talent

Binge watched the whole thing. I loved it. The editing. The access. It was all elite. It gives you a really in depth look into the whole program AND everyone in it.
