Nash is obviously the better player, but he's also 38 years old and one wrong slip on the court away from retirement. He also won't have Phoenix's fountain of youth, a.k.a. their medical staff, in his back pocket anymore either.
And now we're just in the hunt for a perimeter defender/shooting guard as opposed to a point guard. Filled one hole by digging out a different one.
All that said, this clearly makes us better next year. But the concept of "winning with defense" goes out the window now
Good point. That 'wrong slip' on the court happened to both Shumpert and Lin though...both who have had worse injuries than I have ever heard of Nash undergoing. These young guys have just started and are already injured.
Nash, while old, does not rely on supreme speed or athleticism. Shumpert was hurt twice last year and needs his legs. Lin showed positive signs but he needs experience, to be honest. But this isn't about Lin.
I like Shumpert, and will miss his defense on the superstars and his potential on the squad. But when does he return? January? That's the all-star break. Would we rather be without Shump AND Nash to start next season? All while waiting for Shump to show up to play "defense" while Douglas or Felton runs the point?
I would rather play better team defense to compensate for Nash's deficiency in that area....
