Parks said that Kendrick’s year was the greatest year he’s ever seen for a rapper. How is that possible? Y’all are older, can you really say that? Compared to say Biggie in 95? I’m not talking about awards or accolades, just impact as far as music.

He just chatting.

50 Cent had the biggest impact in hip-hop, hands down. His music was everywhere the streets, clubs, jails, coffee shops, radio you name it. East, West, North, South, underground, mainstream, it didnt matter. You literally couldnt go anywhere without hearing his music.

He’s a prime example of Kendrick’s audience. They pretend to hate mainstream rap and somehow, to them, Kendrick isn’t a mainstream rapper

Kendrick’s had the biggest year of a rapper of the MODERN era.

Other rappers have had huge years like Snoop in 93. DMX in 98. 50 and Outkast in 03. Kanye West in 07. Lil Wayne in 08. Childish Gambino in 2018.

The difference with Kendrick is that no one’s had this combination of triumph in a battle, commercial success, critical acclaim AND accolades all in one year.

Snoop had the level of commercial success and acclaim but no major accolades

DMX had the commercial success and acclaim but battled nobody and garnered no accolades

50 had the commercial success, triumph in battle, but didn’t have the level of acclaim or accolades.

Outkast had the commercial success, acclaim and accolades (Only rappers ever to win AOTY at the Grammys) But they battled nobody

Kanye West had incredible commercial success and acclaim, won the “battle” with 50 Cent, and garnered numerous accolades including a leading 8 nominations at the 2008 Grammys, winning 5, although losing in the general field.

Lil Wayne had ASTRONOMICAL commercial success. Acclaim and accolades, with a leading 8 nominations at the 2009 Grammys, winning 3, but losing in the general field.

Childish Gambino had commercial success, acclaim, and accolades with This Is America. He swept all of his nominations at the 2019 Grammys including becoming the first rapper to win Song Of The Year and Record Of The Year. But he didn’t battle and he didn’t even put out an album.

You could say Jay-Z in 01 but we all know what happened come December 4th…

Nas won the battle with Jay in 01 and going into 02 was scorching hot but didn’t garner any accolades.

I’m not including Pac in 96 or Biggie in 97 because a lot of their success took place posthumously and neither garnered accolades.

Kendrick is the first to decisively win a battle, garner massive sales success, universal acclaim, and every accolade under the sun (including sweeping the Grammys and becoming only the third rapper to win in the general category)

Understood but a lot of people really don’t care about the beef and Kendrick winning like that. Not Like Us isn’t playing everywhere and being listened to be literally everyone like In Da Club was. My white friends stay at home moms knew about In Da Club. And I’m young but I heard when Biggie blew up in ‘95 you could stand on a corner on NYC, Philly or DC and car after car was blasting his music. That’s what I mean by impact. Kendrick hasn’t had that type of impact, at least on the East Coast.
