Drake has been the biggest rapper for well over a decade now but does he have a track as legendary/as big as Pump It Up or Party Up for instance that will instantly ring off 10-20 years from now? :patrice:

I'll never understand this argument. Why does Pump It Up still work today? Because of magic...or because it was such a smash hit that the kids who fukked with it back then still fukk with it today as adults - and the song is dope enough to match the vibe of many parties today? It's the latter. Now ask yourself, do you really think the guy who has had more hits than any rapper EVER won't have the same impact as that in x years.

0 To 100 came out eight years ago. Two years from now when you play that anywhere, it's still gonna go off.

I enjoyed the conversation with PJ Morton. A lot of the other conversation ran together for me.

Yall gotta take Drake dikk out yall mouths fr. Nowhere in my post was I hating or arguing. I asked a question :dead:

I’d argue Back to Back > 0-100 as one of them ones but I don’t think it’s like that. Drake has been out 10+ years, What songs of his are in movies/shows/games?

I finally agree with Ish on something. I don't understand being a "music fan" who is incapable of listening to music if it's not the genre you prefer. My favorite genre is jazz, second favorite is hip hop. I'm not a big r&b fan, in fact I really only like 50s-80s r&b. I like some r&b songs from 90s-now and beyond but it's not my thing outside of a few exceptions (I love SZA's album for instance). I'm not a dance music fan either but if you were fukking chicks or going to parties during college age years you definitely fukked with a Daft Punk or Justice song.

Also...Beyonce's album isn't just "dance music." That's another thing I dislike. The either/or way many people (especially rap fans...) listen to music is embarrassing; if it's not bangers it's trash basically. Cuff It is like a modern disco track reminiscent of Get Lucky. Church Girl is a trap r&b dance song. Plastic Off The Sofa is straight up classic r&b (and sounds like it was made for Frank Ocean). Virgo's Groove could have been on Off The Wall. Pure/Honey's second half is pure 80s Prince right down to the falsetto. I would expect anyone who has a decent music range to hear all that and appreciate it on some level, whether you like the songs or not. But you can't possibly hear that as an informed listener and say "this is all gay dance music."

I mean Joe broke down the album pretty fairly and he's good at that when he wants too. Parks usually can too, not sure what his problem was, all this "Beehive" talk is tired and late. They need to grow up.

That's said, maybe ppl are thinking to much of Ice regarding his musical knowledge. He tangentially related to the industry but that don't mean shyt.

I tend to think Ice's music opinions are childish as fukk, which also mirrors the specific type of music he predominantly listens to. But like I said, that's the "bangers or nothing" crowd and I despise that shyt. Trap has really dumbed down a lot of people's musical palate and IQ. I say that as someone who likes plenty of trap shyt, I'm not a 90s rap purist by any means.

Also it's funny how it takes a few weeks for Joe to be honest about Drake albums. Finally admitting all that monotone one note crooning ain't it. It's not even a bad album but you can't make those songs work consistently with one note. And while I think the production on both these albums are very different, the vocal performance is the bigger difference. I don't expect Drake to sing as well as Beyonce but when you only have one note you should prob avoid doing what he did on there.

Bangers or nothing is how most people consume music. It’s why the Kendrick album isn’t doing well and it’s why J Cole can only make music for his Stans.

but Ice is paid to discuss music so he should be able to provide a better perspective.

Ice music taste is weird because he’s not even a big current trap fan, he doesn’t really listen to future, thug, lil baby and gunna He’s a huge fan of the Memphis sound and Chicago drill

the issue with Honeslty, never mind is not the singing it’s is the fact that fans expect anthems when you get a new drake project. It’s why Sticky and Jimmy crooks are doing so well.

Drake could be the greatest singer in the world and that want affect how well a song like “falling back” is received

The level of quality between the Patreon and the regular episodes is startling. Ish drives a lot of conversation on that side, which is a good change of pace IMO

Who y'all think he's talking about in that Pizza store story? I'm a take a shot in the dark and say he's talking about Troy Ave.

Definitely Troy Ave. He shoulda ran down on him though and pieced him up

It's how most rap fans consume music but it's certainly not how other genres are consumed. The white people who listen to rap music don't judge other genres they listen to like that. Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, etc albums aren't full of bangers (or hits, if you want to use a different word)) either yet fans fukk with that shyt beginning to end. But this gets us to that "why are ballads dead in black music" conversation and a lot of it boils down to conditioning, declines in music IQ, and the over obsession with bangers etc. Using the Kendrick album as an example...Count Me Out is a dope song. It's not a "banger" by any stretch and some people are gonna skip that shyt solely off that. With the Beyonce album I feel pretty confident that Plastic Off The Sofa will end up with some of the least amount of streams because of how traditional the song is...but it's a great song.

I just think that's a wack way to approach music. I judge bangers against other bangers. If that's what you're trying to do, did you do it right? That's where the Kendrick album falters IMO especially when compared to Future. There are multiple attempts on there that are just alright or forgettable. And you know I'm a Kdot stan but hearing people talk like it's the most advanced music of the year and I'm just like dude...Purple Hearts is so meh...shut the fukk up.

You’re right on about making the distinction with rap fans

It’s also why mainstream male R&B is dead and the last time it was relevant is when Bryson Tiller had an album full of bangers that’s damn near impossible to recreate

It’s a terrible way to approach music but when music is mainly consumed through playlist and “pass me the aux” there’s a certain upbeat vibe that’s needs to be consistent in the music
