How can I get a 5 without waiting a month or getting raped on ebay/cl?
Go to any store??? Check Sams club, Radioshacks
I swear I called damn near every store in Houston. Everybody says 3-4 weeks

Try going to an AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint store.
If there is a limited supply no store is going to say yeah come on in. But sometimes there are situations where if youre there physically you might be able to get one like someone returning one for whatever reason or they forgot there was one in the back bla bla bal

everyday after 10PM Apple stores update their inventory so if you try to order an iphone from Apple site from 10pm to 4am at the end you can choose to have it shipped or select pickup and see if any Apple store in your area have it in stock
only works for Apple stores and only for the model you picked
you can do this every night til they're in stock

you realize the reason people have to wait a month is based on the phones popularity right? its not like Apple is hoarding them somewhere hoping to drive up demand

I've been using my 4 without a case for months now and it feels and looks better
plus as light and skinny as the 5 is I wouldnt ruin that with a case

Using a case is how I kept my 4S in perfect condition.
Otter box isn't the only case out there. I have a thin hard plastic case that hardly changes the profile of the phone or add significant weight.
