Johnson is the RB. Jones and Smalling can play there, though they're both pretty shyt, honestly, would have taken Stones and Clyne for both of them.
they are both solid cbs but play at rb too much

especially smalling, its hurt his rep.

Hodgson made one mistake with the team though, taking lampard who does nothing nowadays other than penalties. should of taken another rb instead

Time for a serious post.

I've heard a lot of "if they didn't play for united" about Jones and Smalling. First off, Jones has been good this season, forget what you've heard. Smalling has been so so but has more often than not played RB.

And if they both played for someone else and in their preferred position, they'd more than likely be there on merit.

In a big game, against a side where we won't have possession, Jones or Smalling at RB are a great option, even if long term they should be playing CB. I'd trust either of them there over Johnson/Flanagan/Stones.

As for the squad overall, name wise it pales in comparison to previous World Cups(except 2010), but in terms of football, it has the potential to play the most exciting football we've played in years, it most likely won't, but it has the potential too, and that's enough for me. The likes of Henderson, Lallana, Sterling, Welbeck etc aren't incredible individual players(sterling perhaps has the potential to be, but not yet), but they are tactically astute system players that will allow players like Sturridge and Rooney to do their thing. Now we know Rooney will flop, but that's the theory. And by tactically astute 'role' players if you will, i don't mean no talent runners. I mean these players can pass and move, they can play football.

It's a far cry from massive name individual players shoehorned together who can't play in a system.(even though Gerrard and Lampard are both still there).

Sterling(if he doesn't start) and Barkley from the bench will scare the absolute living daylights out of teams.

I'm optimistic. As in get out of the group optimistic.

Oh now, i forgot.

Here's the problem. Long time OFT's may know how much i bang the "Rooney better as a #9" drum", and it presents a real problem in terms of tactics.

You simply cannot trust Rooney as a #10 against the top teams, he just does not have the creativity or passing range to play there, i don't care how many 50 yard floating balls he pings to Valencia(compare these with Scholes' old 'to the wing' PINGERS, they are so slow and lofted it's unbelievable).

But the English media won't give up on him as this #10 maverick type. So you play Rooney as a #10, Sturridge as the #9. Then a 2 man midfield. Well that means Henderson or Lallana misses out, 2 of the players previously we mentioned are good for the system.(Gerrard obviously plays).

Now i'd much rather play Rooney as the #9, but then Sturridge is shifted to the wing and we lose some effectiveness from him. But then we get the 3 man midfield. It's a dilemma for realz m8s.

Way i see it, we have 2 options.

Defence is set(except RB maybe but we're not speculating on that atm).

---------------Gerrard--------------
-----Henderson-------Lallana---

Sturridge----Rooney---Welbeck

or

------Gerrard----Henderson-----

Sterling----Rooney----Welbeck
-------------Sturridge--------------

I'm missing Wilshere out of all of it but are we sure on his fitness? We'll ignore him for now.

Obviously the first omits Sterling, he gets in the second but on the right, and he's played his best football at the tip of a diamond.

Personally i'd go the first for Italy and Uruguay and the second against Costa Rica.

I'll hear absolutely nothing against Welbz, because he's dat guy(zup zup). Big game player and has been tremendous for England. He'll play.
