My guess is that they thought their back line could just bully these guys and physically win 50/50 balls over the top, but guys like Salah will take contact and keep going anyway. Firmino and Mane will win those balls and dribble through you. It was a nice idea, I guess, as part of a plan to try and force a loss of possession by blocking out the midfield and pressing the passers kicking the ball around in the back, but Liverpool's front lines are not afraid of physicality.

Look at it this way: If Mourinho had Salah on his team and started him, he'd just play him as a D-Mid or put him back at left back and tell him to play a deep line anyway.
