It happened twice when only 4 teams were auto entry to the CL:

Liverpool in 2005 won the CL but finished 5th in the league . . Everton were 4th. Liverpool lobbied to get automatic entry to the next season of CL, Everton went into the qualifiers but got smacked up in the first round

Chelsea in 2012 won the CL but finished 6 in the league, Spurs finished 4th and got their CL place wiped out in favour of Chelsea

I think it’s 2 things personally, he probably does want some extra bodies cause of the ones arriving late due to the finals; he’s also backed himself into a corner with Trent and he’s too @Yayo Toure to stand by his convictions and just not take him. This way he can either climb down without embarrassment saying there was no way he couldn’t take him or it’ll look like he gave him a chance. Be mental if he doesn’t take him, for selfish reasons I hope he doesn’t but proper proper mental.
