they are poor at the moment. probably down to midfield.

historically (last 25 years) france has had a very good defence. world class at times.

I mean they have Kounde who is probably the best defender in Barcelona. Varane still one of the best CBs, Konate would be starting in Liverpool if he wasn't injured, Upamecano starting in Munich, Pavard starting in Munich and Hernandez one of, if not the best full backs in Italy.

So "poor" is a weak word, poor would mean that someone is better.
