Has anyone been reading these Comixology originals? A couple of blogs and podcasts were predicting this would disrupt Marvel and DC, much like Netflix disrupted the movie and TV networks. But I don't see how that's possible.
For one thing, they're all five- six issue minis. They won't make any impact until they get to a point where these books are ongoing. I don't know if these are all 'trial runs' and the most popular ones will get full series, but they need to be longer.
Also, probably because they're only five to six issues, they're not paced well at all, and most of them aren't very good. Super Freaks had an interesting baby boomers/ gen x vs millennials/gen z parallel going on, and an interesting plot twist, but most of the character arcs were underdeveloped. I also hated how they fell into the kids story cliche of every adult being an idiot or a fukking a$$hole except the black girl's mother.
Ask for Mercy is an absolute mess. The first issue starts with an awkward info dump before throwing us right into the action. A lot of telling and not showing. Issue two does a much better job setting up the premise, to the point where you could probably start there.
Elephantmen: Death of Shorty is ehh. Elephantmen was an Image comic in the early 2000s, and it seems like you need to read that before this because I am not invested in these characters as is.
Goliath Girls had a kind of messy first issue, but I liked Sam Humphries' run on Green Lanterns, so I want to keep reading. Too bad issue two got delayed a month.
It'll be a minute before these will even be on the level of the indie publishers. The only upside is they're so short you might as well read them all. They should team with Valiant and brand their books as Comixology originals since most of that stuff is on there anyway.
