Getting the timing for a good horror crowd is always tough as hell! The funny thing is I think the best theater movies are typically my least favorite kind of horrors. Jump scares hit harder, telegraphing scares is more effective, and building dread/tension without a big payoff has less impact.Oh my lord, the opening title roll for Smile was intense in theaters. Epilepsy be damned, I still couldn’t turn my head away from the screen.
Rarely do I ever go to a primetime showing on Friday/Saturday because of that distraction factor, lol. Especially when it’s my first time watching a film, cause that can totally make or break the experience. Barbarian was a 3pm watch on a weekday. Kids and rowdy teens in school, and the soccer mom Beckys were at work. Graceful viewing.
Extremely jealous you got to experience Sinister in theaters when it came out. Hoping AMC can roll that one back as part of their ‘Thrills & Chills’ surprise line-up.
S/O to your goddaughter too. It’s fascinating seeing how people process things differently. I was the complete opposite growing up when it came to Michael, and that theme. Nowadays? That shyt is practically an anthem.
Sinister legit hit ALL the marks though. That was really a fun one. Paranormal Activity is still my favorite memory in a theater. You know what's a classic that I'm glad I saw in a packed audience? The re-release of Exorcist with deleted footage included. That was a good one!
Thinking about how horror feels more mainstream than ever, and how iconic tracks like the Michael theme have become...I'm sorta surprised we haven't seen any attempts to revive horrorcore rappers. Hip hop needs a modern Grave Diggaz. We need a new age Diary of a Madman!
