James Wan has another one with this. That man knows how to do his horror.:merchant:First episode is insane.
That ain’t Wan’s project, but yeah he’s amazing. Lol.

Hoping a story like Malignant isn’t a one-off for him. Aqua Man’s cool and all, but I need more of them fukked up horror tales. :ohlawd:

[Review] Netflix’s James Wan-Produced “Archive 81” Falls Down Rabbit Hole of Eerie Cult Conspiracy

The creator of the Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring franchises is an executive producer on the new Netflix series Archive 81, based on the found-footage podcast drama that premiered in 2016. The show (which hits Netflix on Friday, Jan. 14) tells the story of Dan (MamoudouAthie), a young archivist hired to restore a collection of nineties videotapes damaged in a fire. As Dan delves into the tapes, he begins to piece together the story of a documentary filmmaker, Melody (Dina Shihabi), who was investigating a sinister New York City cult. The more footage Dan restores, the more invested he becomes in Melody’s story—until fates become dangerously, supernaturally entwined.

An executive producer’s involvement on a project is usually little and just a name to attract folks to a title.

@MartyMcFly @Jello Biafra Does a producer have a claim over a movie? Why is Loot telling me it’s not WAN’s movie? The reviews are saying it’s a Wan movie- should he or should not be given credit for this Archive 81?

Can you settle this dispute? If Wan is a producer that means he has creative license, authority and control over the product? Which means that it’s his movie/series by association and the movie has his name in the bylines. Even the visuals, story, pacing, you can tell WAN’s influence is all through this series.

Be quiet. If he produced it.. it’s WAN’s!!! Producer, creator, etc etc - it’s his co-sign. Then it’s his movie.
An executive producer generally doesn’t handle the business and technical aspects of getting a film made like a main producer would. At most, they usually provide financial backing for a project. One of my pet peeves is media outlets billing a project as the the executive producer’s, and leaving the director/showrunner in the dark.

Kinda like when folks thought Jordan Peele was the mind behind HBO’s Lovecraft Country, when Misha Green was the showrunner and wrote every episode. Peele’s a big name, so I get it.

It’s different for every project though. Like I’m pretty sure Kevin Williamson played a key role on Scream (2022) and he was listed as EP.

It depends on the producer. There’s no one way answer because every situation is different. For someone like Wan or Peele, when they produce a project they let the directors and writers and other creatives do their thing. They might come in with notes or pitch ideas but it’s not their project.

But then you have the Bond franchise where the producers truly have ownership over it and work in concert with the directors and writers and actors to craft the story and the finished product. Kevin Feige at marvel works in the same vein.

And to his point, Kevin williamson had a big hand in the new Scream and was on set.

Basically, you are arbitrarily deciding the role of producer based on what your own set of standards are. That’s not how it works.

Doubt that James Wan would lend his name to any production without having substantial oversight and involvement - he is one of the preeminent Masters of Horror, you don’t just get decide what’s a James Wan brand. From the cinematography, colors to the script- this Archive 81 series screams WAN’s work. That’s that. James Wan is not going to drop the name association without involvement, I know enough about his movies now and how he operates. I’ve also watched horror movies longer than you.

This is not like Carpenter dismissing Rob Zombie- where he made it clear that he had nothing to do with Halloween and distanced himself from the project.

Be right back with the research. Then you can base your feedback on the information instead of running up to dismiss my reasoning.

Lovecraft was pure shyt btw, couldn’t get past the 2nd ep.

I mean, I wasn’t dismissing it beforehand.

But now I am.

Oh ok . You just want to argue, and instigate; you can proceed to do that dumb shyt by yourself. Im going back to watching James WAN’s Archive 81; very interesting show that Wan produced and helped to create. Wan has really left his mark on the horror genre, Wan is among the best of the best. I look forward to seeing other horror movies that James Wan produces AND creates by name association.

Depends on whether they are the executive producer (the top of the heap person who controls budget stuff) or the producer (usually more involved with the actual creation of the project and answers to the EP) and also on the specific project really. Then there are cases where the titles mean nothing and are just negotiated into actor or director contracts.
For a creative turned producer like Shonda Rhimes she will get her name plastered over a lot of projects but she doesn't have as much involvement in all of them.
Like she basically shepherded How To get Away With Murder to TV but the actual creator/showrunner was Peter Nowalk while Shonda was the executive producer. But for Scandal that was all Shonda.
There are guys like Jason Blum who are 100% executives so they really aren't ever involved in the creative parts of their projects but with someone like Wan it can be a mixed bag.
For Malignant, Wan was the producer and the writer/director but for that I Know What You Did Last Summer TV show on Amazon all Wan did was executive produce and left the creative parts up to the consistently awful Sara Goodman to be the showrunner.

I looked into Archive 81 and it looks like Wan wasn't involved in the creative side (or just wasn't credited if he was) and looks like this is just a project coming from his production company Atomic Monster.
The show is being ran by Rebecca Sonnenshine who has a history of showrunning genre TV shows (she was a producer and writer on The Vampire Diaries, Outcast and The Boys) and the series has directing credits from people who have written/directed episodes of Stranger Things and the movies The Endless, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Spring so there is a solid horror resume for the folks involved.

Ok thanks. I can accept that. At least you verified with details thanks.

What happens to Sidney in Scream 2022? Does she survive? As my shyt timing would work, finally made up my mind for tomorrow night’s last showing but there’s a snowstorm scheduled to touch down. Further delays . So I gave up- I’m content with waiting for the paramount plus stream. Curiosity is too much to not know this major spoiler. :palm:
