Alexander: Cunningham What Broner Needed, Will Dominate Figueroa

By Keith Idec

Based on what Devon Alexander has seen recently during training sessions in West Palm Beach, Florida, he has high expectations of Adrien Broner when meets Omar Figueroa Jr.

“Domination,” Alexander told BoxingScene.com. “I expect domination from my little brother.”

The 28-year-old Broner recently made Kevin Cunningham his head trainer. Alexander considers Cunningham, who has guided Alexander in and out of the ring since he was a kid, exactly what Broner needs for the former four-division champion to rejuvenate his career.

“He’s focused, totally focused,” Alexander said. “He just needs a guy who can get that [from him] and he’s got that with Kevin. Kevin’s gonna make sure he’s doing what he’s supposed to do. He’s back hungry. I can see it in his eyes. When we talk, you can tell that he hates that people are counting him out.”

Alexander and Broner both are preparing for important upcoming fights.

St. Louis’ Alexander (27-4, 14 KOs) is scheduled to box Victor Ortiz (32-6-2, 25 KOs), of Ventura, California, in a 12-round welterweight fight FOX will air February 17 from the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas. Cincinnati’s Broner (33-3, 24 KOs, 1 NC) and Figueroa (27-0-1, 19 KOs), of Weslaco, Texas, are set to square off April 21, probably at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

“I just wanna see him do what he has to do to get back to the top, because that’s where he belongs,” Alexander said. “He has the skills, the talent, everything that you need to be a great fighter. And that’s what he has. I think come fight night, he’s gonna show people that he’s still Adrien Broner and he’s still one of the best out there.”

The polarizing Broner decided during the aftermath of his unanimous-decision defeat to Mikey Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs) in their 12-round, 140-pound fight July 29 at Barclays Center to replace longtime head trainer/father figure Mike Stafford with Cunningham. The no-nonsense Cunningham, who has assisted Stafford in the past, has gotten Broner’s attention in camp thus far.

“What I see is he’s listening,” Alexander said. “He’s listening and he has somebody that’s guiding him. He’s not running the show. He has somebody actually telling him what he needs to be doing, not a yes man. He’s following the program that Kevin has and he’s actually doing it, and he’s focused. And that’s what you need, in my opinion, and Kevin has that. That’s what he’s good at.

“In my opinion, this is the best place for Adrien to be, with Kevin, and he’s gonna come out big from this switch, with changing trainers and everything, and just getting focused and all the way just totally grinding. I think you’re gonna see a difference in his performance when he does fight.”

Alexander anticipates Broner beating the relentless, rugged Figueroa in impressive fashion.

“I expect him to beat Figueroa very soundly,” Alexander explained, “because once he follows this program that Kevin has out here, he’s gonna be ready to go all night, use his legs and every attribute, every talent that he possesses. He’s going to be able to use that coming out of this camp and following the program.”

he needed to make that trainer switch after Maidana. They were clueless when AB got in a tough fight.

whats your issue with roy jones breh?:gucci:
he's clearly one of the best fighters ever
Nothing I liked Roy; my eye knows best though

Theres too many instances of Roy touching people and they look like they seen the white light and God, and the same in his later career where he laid on the ropes vs plodders that couldn't catch him on their fastest day, took shots fell to the mat with his eyes open, then went asleep like 15 secs after the ten count....Too many instances of this vs opponents and himself.....:heh:

Roy Im a fan of I just have all type of negative feelings in regards to his career; plus he a cheat that really didn't challenge himself.......A BHOP victory post BHOP Tito would have erased those negative thoughts, the ko' losses(potentially dives) thereafter and all of that, but BHOP didnt want that......... negative shadow on both Mainly BHOP yet it still affected Roys legacy that was his legacy match, they was Floyd and Manny to a slight lesser degree at one time......
