Porter Doubts Danny Garcia's 'Heart, Mindset' After Refusing Fight
By Keith Idec
Shawn Porter held out hope recently that Danny Garcia would agree to fight him next.
Porter wasn’t exactly surprised, however, when Garcia turned him down. The former IBF welterweight champion suspected Garcia would seek an easier return from his 12-round, split-decision defeat to Keith Thurman in their welterweight championship unification fight March 4.
“I thought it would be possible,” Porter told BoxingScene.com. “Obviously, we’re questioning his heart and his mindset at this point. He didn’t have a fight, I didn’t have a fight. We both have losses to Keith Thurman and we both wanna be champion. When you add all that up, that makes a fight. But he wasn’t willing to accept the fight now, so we’ll see what happens after this fight.”
This fight is Porter’s 10-round, 147-pound bout against Adrian Granados on November 4. Showtime will televise Porter-Granados as part of a tripleheader from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center next month.
Porter respects Granados (18-5-2, 12 KOs) and understands that their meeting won’t amount to an easy victory for him. As for Philadelphia’s Garcia (33-1, 19 KOs), the former WBC welterweight champion could battle Brandon Rios (34-3-1, 25 KOs) in his next fight, clearly less of a challenge than Porter would’ve presented.
“I saw that,” Porter said. “He’s handling his career the way he wants to. His family is handling his career the way they want to. But the bottom line is after this fight with Adrian Granados, we’ll look and see what’s out there. And we’ll call his name again, and see if he wants the fight.”
Las Vegas’ Porter most recently stopped former WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (31-5, 24 KOs) in the ninth round of their April 22 bout at Barclays Center. Porter (27-2-1, 17 KOs), who’ll turn 30 on October 27, was supposed to box Thomas Dulorme on the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Conor McGregor undercard August 26 in Las Vegas, but withdrew from that bout due to a death in his family that occurred during training camp.
If the Akron, Ohio, native gets past Granados, he expects his first appearance in 2018 to come in a high-profile fight.
“We’re still gunning for that WBC title, so after this fight we’ll definitely entertain getting back in the ring with Keith Thurman,” said Porter, who lost a close unanimous decision to Thurman (28-0, 22 KOs, 1 NC) in June 2016 at Barclays Center. “And outside of Keith Thurman, also Danny Garcia.”
