Willie Monroe Predicts Canelo Will Stop Golovkin in '9 or 10'

By Keith Idec

People rolled their eyes when Willie Monroe Jr. told them that Andre Ward would stop Sergey Kovalev in their rematch last month.

Ward indeed defeated Kovalev by eighth-round technical knockout June 17 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

The middleweight contender has another unpopular prediction for HBO Pay-Per-View’s next main event. Monroe thinks Canelo Alvarez will stop Gennady Golovkin when they square off September 16 in Las Vegas.

Monroe made the prediction to Box Nation, which interviewed him Monday following a press conference to officially announce his own middleweight title fight against England’s Billy Joe Saunders on September 16. The Rochester, New York, native is very familiar with Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs), who stopped Monroe in the sixth round of their May 2015 fight in Inglewood, California, and broke down why he feels Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) is so suited to succeed against the Kazakh knockout artist that same night at T-Mobile Arena.

After telling a Box Nation announcer, “I’m gonna go with Canelo,” Monroe confirmed that he always believed Mexico’s Alvarez would stop Golovkin if they fought.

“It’s funny,” Monroe said. “Right after I fought Golovkin, 15 minutes after I got out of the ring, they said, ‘Who do you think will win out of Canelo and Golovkin?’ I said, ‘I think Canelo would win.’ Everybody said, ‘Aw, you’re being a sore loser.’ I said, ‘How could I be a sore loser? I just got out of the ring 15 minutes ago. I’m still getting my faculties together.’ ”

Despite losing to the IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion, Monroe noticed flaws and tendencies in Golovkin’s game that make him certain Alvarez will win by knockout.

“When I fought Golovkin, in rounds three, four and five, where I got my best work done at, was on the inside,” Monroe explained. “And I found out that Golovkin is a mid-range fighter. If you’re too far away from him, he’s just gonna walk you down and try to cut off the ring. If you’re too close to him, he can’t get off. When you’re right in his wheelhouse, right in his power, that’s where he can be really dangerous. That’s where he is dangerous at.

“And with Canelo, I think the only style that beats Canelo is legs. You have to have legs. Canelo has great upper-body movement, awesome inside work, very good counter-puncher, but his feet aren’t fast. So the things that give Canelo problems are fighters with good feet. Nothing else really gives Canelo problems. And when I say good feet, I’m not just talking about cutting off the ring like Golovkin does, because Canelo’s not gonna be moving. Canelo wants you to come to him, so he can counter. And Canelo’s faster than Golovkin. So personally, I think Canelo stops him in nine or 10.”

The 30-year-old Monroe (21-2, 6 KOs) will meet Manchester’s Saunders (24-0, 12 KOs) in a 12-round fight for Saunders’ WBO middleweight title September 16 at Copper Box Arena in London.

Nice breakdown, he must spent some time lurking here :troll:

Also I'm picking him to upset BJS in September with an UD, BJS won't walk him down and Monroe seems like the better pure boxer to me
I take no responsibility for the scorecards there though :hubie:

Lil nikka was hovering over the old faced ghost when the ref made them touch gloves:picard:

The Ghost aint no easy cookie to crack like that, intrigued as fukk about Figueroa; everything he landed appeared murderous my goodness, even the clinch shots....He got that fat boy ww juice now though, that was once the Ghost, I think Figs might could upset some of these contenders and belteholders if that power gauge is accurate

The Ghost my nikka though, :heh: at him getting dropped over and over to get up with a  and unleash his own shyt......Warrior....Heart.....HOF'er

I am mad. If Broner was as good as his trainer implies, he'd be undefeated, with KOs over Porter and Maidana, which would boost Mikey's stock huge when he beats his ass. Tell your boy to get the job done next time breh.

While Figgy looked good, Ghost is very very washed. Those shots were nice, but none of them were worthy of the multiple KDs in my opinion. I'm glad Ghost hung em up.

He needs a belt doesn't he? Those fights are 2 belt fights, one straight for an IBF title the other one for an interim title which makes you an automatic mandatory to One Time when he's back.
Why Garcia wouldn't need that? He said he wants a Thurman rematch anyway.

if he turns down both that's not a good look at all.

Thurman took back to back tough fights. First Porter than Garcia. Don't know why Garcia couldn't do the same thing. He took an L against Thurman but it's not like he damaged goods in the fights or like he got completely dominated with a 120-108 UD.

Fighters usually don't fight tough opponents after Ls but that's because they usually fall back a little and they don't get another title shot until they work their way back and/or because they damaged goods in the L or got exposed badly. Neither happened to Swift from these. Garcia is in a lucky spot here, he can fight immediately for a title after he took his first L, his name still sounds well, and he should be pretty much the same as he was before the Thurman fight. I can't see why he should not fight either Spence or Porter.

NO he doesn't need a belt...if he needed a belt he's be the one scrambling calling out Porter N Spence

Porter N Spence need Swift not the other way around

Swift wants Thurman end of discussion...he wants the rematch against the guy who beat him...he wants the 2 belts...not 1 N not an interim :beli:

Danny already accepted the shawn fight. And y'all need to start paying attention to fight view numbers. .Danny is the 2nd biggest star at 147 behind pac man. He don't need to fight anyone especially since his resume shyts all over young erroll.
