Hearn: Dirrell Refused To Enter WBSS, So Smith Can't Go Either

EDDIE HEARN will fight to ensure Callum Smith’s WBC super-middleweight clash with Anthony Dirrell is not switched to the American’s hometown in Michigan.

Smith signed a contract to face Dirrell for the vacant WBC belt in Los Angeles on September 9.

The clash is due to be on the undercard of Leo Santa Cruz’s WBA featherweight title defence against Abner Mares.

But Dirrell now wants the fight moved to Flint in Michigan and Hearn has spoken with WBC chief Mauricio Sulaiman to ensure it will not be switched.

The Matchroom chief said: “We signed a contract for September 9 in Los Angeles and lodged in with the WBC.

“They came back on Wednesday and they said they wanted to change the venue to Flint, Michigan, on September 8.

“We said we’ve signed the contract and there is no mechanism to change the contract.

“People have booked flights and hotels, friends and fans of Callum. It was supposed to be on the bill with Santa Cruz-Mares.

“So we have said to Mauricio Sulaiman, we shouldn’t have to fight on September 8 in Flint, we’ve signed the contract. We are waiting on a ruling.”

There was the potential for both men to enter the new World Boxing Super Series along with WBA champion George Groves and have their world title clash in that knockout tournament.

The tournament has a prize pot of more than £20m for super-middleweights and would also offer at least one guaranteed unification clash.

But Hearn said: “Dirrell is not going in the Super Series. Originally we were hoping to go in and this fight would be the first round but Dirrell refused so Callum can’t go in either.”

I was really hyped off the Spence brook fight so I said Keith pretty much has no chance against spence. But I almost forgot how sharp Keith is in the early rounds. He has that speed and pop and hurts damn near everybody he fights early. He's also great in close quarters. Considering brook was able to land cleanly on Spence early, I think Keith would have a good shot to hurt him. I still favor Spence but I see it as more of an even fight now.
