WBC May Order Interim-Title Fight Due To Keith Thurman's Injury

By Miguel Rivera

The World Boxing Council is looking at the possibility of opening the door to order an WBC interim-title fight in the welterweight division, after world champion Keith Thurman announced that he underwent elbow surgery that will keep him on the sidelines until the end of the year.

Thurman had surgery on his right elbow, which boxer says is going to take at least six months of recovery time. Thurman, who already held the WBA title, defeated Danny Garcia on March 4 by unanimous decision to add the WBC title to his waist. A few weeks later, he traveled back to New York to have surgery to remove calcium deposits in his right elbow. The surgery was performed on April 19.

“One thing for sure, the doctor doesn’t want me to rush back into action,’’ Thurman said. “You can’t jump back into the race too soon. It might start to feel good after a month or two, but you don’t want to rush it. My right elbow’s job is to launch punches like a missile. It might feel good, but it might not be able to sustain that. It might cause inflammation to develop, and then you have to wait to let it calm down and feel better. I figure a 4-month recovery will be quick. The doctor recommended 6 months of no action, before training. I won’t rush it.’’

WBC President Maurcio Sulaiman does not want to have the division put on hold while Thurman recovers.

At the moment the mandatory challenger is Shawn Porter. There is also the possibility that WBC/WBO 140-pound champion Terence Crawford moves up, and there is also former champ Danny Garcia who wants another crack at the belt.

"I learned that [Thurman] had the operation and that he will be out of action. We will attend to this matter immediately, we need activity. Shawn Porter is the mandatory challenger - it could be Porter-Crawford, there is also Danny Garcia who lost a close fight. This is important," said Sulaiman to ESPN Deportes.

They heard he's gonna move up soon and their champs have privileges such like this :yeshrug: WBO same way
You can't say you'd be mad at a Porter v Crawford fight

That's cool, but I simply don't agree :yeshrug: Mikey had the power in sparring gloves to have Rios n Maidana respect em, but he won't get ABs in 8oz ers? I don't see it.

With respect to Rios & Maidana neither are good defensively. AB doesn't take too many clean shots & when he has his chin has been sturdy. We're not only talking size Smoke but speed, accuracy, & AB's physicality are major issues for him. At some point Mikey is gonna get cracked with something huge.

Indongo is dealing with a minor hand injury that he suffered in his unification victory against Ricky Burns on April 15 and also has a mandatory defense due against Sergey Lipinets. But Arum said he hopes Crawford and Indongo can fight for all four of the belts.

"I think the chances are very good," Arum said. "We'll go to all the organizations and tell them to :camby: quit f---ing around with the mandatories, and let's make history and unify all the titles."

Since the four-belt era began in the late 1980s, all four belts have been on the line in one fight only three times: Bernard Hopkins' knockout of Oscar De La Hoya to unify all four middleweight titles in 2004; Hopkins' defense of all four in his next fight against Howard Eastman; and, in Hopkins' next fight, his loss of all four by decision to Jermain Taylor. By the time Taylor faced Hopkins in an immediate rematch, one of the belts had been stripped because Taylor failed to make a mandatory defense in time.

"Crawford's gonna fight this summer," Arum said. "If we can get the fight for the unification (against Indongo), that's fine. But he's gonna fight this summer. Now, don't ask me, 'Did (HBO) give you a date?' That's yesterday's news. I'm a f---ing promoter and I'm gonna get a fight that people want to see. I'm gonna put it on, on a date that I want to put it on, and just wait."

When asked about that at ringside after Saturday's bout, Arum told the assembled media, "That's none of your f---ing business! What the f--- are you talking about? HBO has done great for boxing. They've been very good to boxing. I have nothing bad to say about HBO, but they're just a f---ing network. That's all they are. They don't own the business of boxing.

"And you may also want to call up the guy over at Showtime (Stephen Espinoza) and tell him the same thing. He don't own boxing. He's just a f---ing network that puts on stuff for their subscribers."

Bob charged up :whew:

Undisputed seems like the next the move. Should be fairly easy fight to make.

Aye ya'll... I got Murata at #4, behind Canelo, GGG, and Jacobs... he is a lot better than I remember.

.... I don't know how he managed to get robbed at home as a Gold Medalist but....

the WBA should just reward him the mandatory spot and tell N'Dam he'll have to fight another final eliminator :manny:
