Dan Rafael chat wrap 12/2:
- Favors Cuellar, but if Mares won it is not a huge upset.
- Lomachenko vs. Mikey Garcia? Lomachenko probably beats anyone from 135 and down.
- Does not think RJJ ever gets a CW title shot. Sad that he is fighting in February.
- Skeptical BJS fights Canelo or GGG.
- Personal feelings aside, how does he rate BJS as a boxer? Just a guy.
- What would sell more PPV's for Mayweather: Pacquiao rematch or Connor McGregor? Both do big numbers, but probably McGregor.
- Thoughts on Walters quitting? There is a fine line beating packing it in and taking a beating. Walters didn't appear hurt, cut, or had been KD. He was being showcased on HBO and being paid $550k, so the obligation is to lay it on the line, which he did not do. He never wants to see a guy injured, but the way that fight ended left him feeling like he had the right to be critical as it went against the norms of boxing.
- Rust was not the reason Walters lost. He could have had 10 tune ups and he still would have lost.
- Pacquaio likely fights again in April.
- He personally ranked Crawford 7th in their PFP rankings. He and others had a tough time ranking him because he is certainly talented, but his resume isn't quite there yet.
- Sees no reason why ESPN shouldn't make how each person voted public in the PFP voting (regards to who didn't put GGG in top 10). He tells people who he votes for.
- Even though he scored for Kovalev, he put Ward above Kovalev in the PFP rankings because he respects the decision and Ward has a better resume.
- How does he judge PFP rankings? Eye test, resume, longevity at a high level, skills, and activity.
- Ward vs. Kovalev PPV numbers? There have been various reports put out this week, but the promoters are saying they don't have concrete numbers from the cable companies yet. What is clear is that it will be under 200k.
- Awaiting official gate numbers for Kovalev-Ward, but it should be around $3.3 million.
- If Kovalev vs. Ward have a rematch, still thinks it is near 50/50.
- The Kovalev vs. Ward decision was not a fix.
- Haye vs. Bellow? Haye with a big KO.
- Fans will get their money worth on the Jan. 28th card (Vargas, Muira).
- With Vargas and Muira being on the same card, it suggests they are setting up a rematch and Salido likely won't fight either guy, leaving him open for Lomachenko.
- Doubts GGG vs. Jacobs goes to a purse bid.
- GGG's team has told him they would be fine giving Jacobs more than the 25%, but will not go up to 40% like Jacobs wants.
- It is possible that GGG vs. Jacobs ends up on PPV. HBO needs to do everything possible to make it a regular TV fight. It would be a joke of a PPV and would not sell well. HBO needs to worry about its network schedule, because 2016 was a weak year.
- Told that if/when GGG vs. Jacobs happens it would either be March 11 or March 18.
- Khan has said he will fight no earlier than this spring because of his hand injury.
- TV future of Lomachenko? Likely a regular HBO guy, who only has a PPV opportunity if he fought someone like Pacquiao.
- Lomachenko vs. Gamboa? Would be fine with that fight, although Gamboa would get his butt kicked.
- Sees no reason why Lomachenko couldn't fight Pacquiao and Crawford.
- Lomachenko vs. Crawford would be a really hard fight to make right now. The purses demanded would be too big for regular HBO, but the fight wouldn't generate enough to do PPV.
- Is TR rushing Lomachenko too much? Lomachenko is the one wanting to move quickly.
- To really move up in the PFP rankings Lomachenko would need a few more notable wins. It is hard to move him ahead of fighters with accomplished resumes who haven't done anything to hurt their placement.
- McGregor vs. GGG? GGG would murder him.
- Shafikov vs. Commey? Likes Commey's pressure and punch output, but it could be tough to get a decision in Russia.
- If Frampton wins he won't have a hard time finding a good fight. Valdez, GRJ, Selby, and the Cuellar-Mares winner would all be possible.
- Spence vs. Brook likely would be in the UK.
- Favoring Menard next weekend.
- Lebedev vs. Gassiev? Been going back and forth. Gassiev has dynamite in his hands, but is inexperienced. Lebedev is a good puncher, has experience, and a good chin. Despite both being Russian, the crowd will be for Lebedev. Lebedev by KO.
- Thoughts on Katie Taylor? Strong fighter, good debut, and seems popular in her country.
- Interesting how GGG gets hit clean a few times and people have "found chinks in the armor", Ward gets knocked down and he "shows perseverance".
- Has said for years that HBO should try and put their boxing fights a little earlier. HBO does do a Saturday movie premier and with them showing a long movie this last weekend, it pushed it even later.
- Cotto vs. Kirkland is a terrible fight.
- Will Joshua vs. Klitschko happen if Joshua wins his next fight? Still unsure.
- Prime RJJ vs. either performance by Ward or Kovalev two weeks ago would be an easy victory for RJJ.
- On not voting Donald Curry for the HOF? He was outstanding, but his prime was too short.
- Winky Wright vs. Sergio Martinez? That would be a tough fight to pick. Love the idea of that fight.
- GGG vs. Froch all depends on if Froch wants to stay retired or not. When he saw him last, Froch seemed content in retirement.
- Lara vs. Foreman is a terrible matchup.
- Imagines a fight around March is next for Valdez. TR would like to have him fight in Tucson.
- Whyte vs. Chisora is a fun fight. If Chisora won, he could end up fighting Luis Ortiz.
- Rios vs. Ortiz? It is in the talking stages. Schaefer would promote the fight and said the deal is not final yet.
- No news on what the WBA will do to Lucas Browne.
- Finds Rigo to be wildly overrated. He has not scored a decent win since Donaire 3.5 years ago, got dropped twice by an unknown Japanese journeyman, and is very inactive.
- How did he score Wright vs. Taylor 1? Draw.
- Prime ODH vs. Lara? ODH.
- Eric Gomez reiterated to him the plan is still to do GGG vs. Canelo in September.
- Lomachenko vs. Mayweather at 130? Wow.
- Berchelt is no longer the mandatory for Lomachenko if he is fighting Vargas.
- Saw the interview where ODH looked and sounded completely drunk. Not good.
- Would love for the winner of Charlo-JRock to fight Andrade.
- Tevin Farmer is a legit contender.
- Farmer vs. Lomachenko? Lomachenko without breaking a sweat.
- Eric Gomez said that Frankie Gomez and Sadam Ali have agreed to fight each other and it should happen first half of 2017.
- Bute vs. Pascal 2? If they want to make the fight and Quebec wants to see it, good for them. In terms of the boxing landscape, who cares.
