Trainer responds to Adrien Broner missing weight
The kid is only human, he’s 25, and yes, he should have made weight.
But, Mike Stafford, father figure and trainer to Adrien Broner, told me, the boxer has been dealing with some heavy stuff.
That’s maybe an understatement.
Charges, potentially serious ones, hang over the head of the Cincinnati talent, though Stafford stressed they are allegations and is of the mind that celebs like AB get targeted by people looking for a windfall.
“The kid has been going through a lot of s–t,” said Stafford, one day before Broner is to fight Ashley Theophane on Spike. “He’s only 25. He’s never been through something like this. We will give him the benefit of the doubt. We tried to make the weight, he was up since about 6 am (working to make 140).”
So, is making 140 no longer viable for AB or did out of the ring distractions mess with his focus?
Stafford said they will decide what weight class is next after the Theophane tango.
“We gotta get through tomorrow night. There’s still a fight. He will be ready to rock. We are not making excuses, Mike. He shoulda made weight. But we didn’t even know if the fight would go on (last week).”

Mike Stafford has to stop making excuses for him. He's not tough enough on AB. But at this point only AB can save AB.

Going to 140 was a step backwards.
You take it to the next level by creating your own weight class.
Look at Canelo. He is excelling at 155 right now.
Only certain fighters in the game have the luxury of dictating weight & Broner is one of them. You have to take advantage of this during negotiations. After this fight, Team Broner needs to stay at 144-145.

Just follow me here. Broner create a class at 142, & demand guys from 130-135 to meet him at that weight.
