Lemieux Misses Weight, Fight With de la Rosa In Limbo
By Jake Donovan
Conflicting reports from Canada leave the status of David Lemieux's scheduled homecoming ring appearance up in the air.
What has been confirmed is that the former middleweight titlist came in over-the-limit for Saturday's planned showdown with James de la Rosa, which is now in jeopardy as a result.
The headlining bout at Olympia Theatre in Montreal, Canada was due to take place at a catchweight limit of 163 lbs. However, Lemieux came in well over the mark at 165.6 lbs. and is unable to come in at the contracted mark.
Where the story gets muddied is the fight's exact status.
TVA Sports in Canada have reported that the bout has been canceled, while other unconfirmed sources have suggested that Lemieux has agreed to pay a 20% fine in order for the main event to proceed, although unclear whether de la Rosa is willing to honor such terms.
Should the fight go on as scheduled, it's due to headline a Pay-Per-View telecast in Canada, as well as air live on Fox Deportes in the United States.
For the moment, Lemieux (34-3, 31KOs) is slated to return to the ring for the first time since his knockout loss to Gennady Golovkin in their middleweight title unification bout last October. The night marked his debut as an HBO Pay-Per-View headliner (albeit as the B-side), coming in the lone attempted defense of the middleweight title he won in a 12-round decision over Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam last June.
Should the main event get canceled, it would conceivably kill the PPV portion of the evening, as the supporting bouts on the show do not justify going the premium route.

Dude already knew he couldn't make 160, so tried to play it safe and asked for 163....and can't get close to that either
