Dan Rafael chat wrap 1/22:
- Is Vasquez Jr. a legitimate contender at 147? Still to be seen. The Martinez fight will give us a better idea.
- GGG wants to fight April 23. Wishes he would face Canelo in May, but that is unlikely. Willie Nelson said he would love to fight GGG. Nelson just came off a good KO of Harrison and is physically bigger than GGG.
- GGG detractors are idiots, GGG has very few qualified opponents who will take a fight with him. Willie Nelson is not a contender, but he is a good pro who wants the fight.
- Lara and Trout are not in the running for GGG because they bring no money, no fan base, and are with PBC which is a nonstarter.
- N'Dam's name jumped out at him when thinking of potential GGG opponents. There just isn't a lot of possibilities. Maybe GGG could be the one to finish N'Dam inside 12.
- Fernando Vargas for HOF? Gave everything he had, but he falls short.
- Salido is not a HOF (missing weight and positive drug test don't help).
- Vernon Forrest HOF? No.
- Vazquez vs. Marquez is one of the greatest fight series ever.
- Charles Martin reign as a HW belt holder won't last long.
- Doubts Glazkov will get a rematch vs. Martin.
- Zero chance Parker or Joshua get a shot at Martin's belt in the immediate future.
- Martin vs. Chisora? Interesting fight. Chisora was there campaigning.
- Garcia vs. Guerrero? Garcia by decision.
- Mansour over Breazeale and Vasquez beating Martinez in a tough battle.
- Today is the 43rd anniversary of the first fight on HBO, Foreman-Frazier 1.
- Wilder's KO could stand up and be KO of the year.
- Expects Wilder vs. Povetkin to be a tough fight. Believes the fight will take place at Barclays.
- Wilder said after the fight he did not feel disrespected by Fury calling him out in the ring. He knows Fury is promoting.
- Does not have high hopes we see Fury vs. Wilder. Both have tough fights coming up and it would be a hard fight to make.
- Technically Wilder is a mess. He pulls straight back, throws wild punches, poor footwork, but he has the greatest equalizer - one punch KO power.
- Why isn't Povetkin criticized like Wilder for his caliber of opponents? He fought overseas and no one in America cared about him. He also didn't talk about fighting the best all the time and then fight guys like Molina.
- The Wilder TV ratings were really bad. Yes football was in competition, but to go from 1.2 million viewers vs. Stiverne, to 500k a year later when he should be a bigger star is stunning.
- Wilder's active fight schedule does help make up for some of his lack of quality opponents.
- Per the WBC Khan is Garcia's mandatory and it technically is due next, because Garcia would have won a vacant title.
- LSC vs. Martinez is a pointless fight.
- The Cotto camp is interested in trying to make a fight vs. JMM. It is possible to make that fight.
- Linares vs. Dejan could be on the Porter-Thurman undercard.
- Pedraza vs. Smith and Rodriguez vs. Williams are being discussed for the Thurman-Porter broadcast.
- Really wants Vargas vs. Salido. It makes sense as a HBO boxing after dark main event. It would fit in the budget, but it needs HBO to get on board to make the fight.
- If Vitali trained for 6 months would he view his as the favorite vs. all the current HW titleholders? Probably.
- Berto vs. Algieri has been mentioned. Personally prefers Berto-Ortiz 2 more.
- Interested in seeing Benevedas develop. Good size and power.
- Spike and ESPN were announced as getting monthly fights from PBC, obviously that is not what is happening.
- PPV prediction for Pacquiao-Bradley 3? Under 500k.
- The Pacquiao-Bradley 3 fight and undercard is better than Mayweather-Berto.
- Greatest fighter he has seen live - skills wise? Floyd and RJJ.
- Talked with Froch last week and he is enjoying retirement. Thinks he may really be done.
- Lara deserved to lose vs. Molina, but he also deserved a W vs. Paul Williams.
- No chance of Joshua vs. Haye being their next fight.
- Kell Brook can slide a little with his opposition because he was stabbed and returning from serious injury, he has to fight a mandatory, and people in the US don't really care about Brook, so there isn't much outcry about his opposition.
- Crawford vs. Lundy? Meh.
- Freddie Roach will train for as long as he physically is able to. Boxing is his life.
- Whether PBC sticks around or not, boxing will remain to be a great sport.
- Thinks Cunningham can get another title shot at cruiserweight.
- A Provodnikov vs. Herrera rematch is not done yet.
- Chocolatito vs. prime Travieso Arce? Roman cleans his clock.
- Hasn't gotten a ticket update for Garcia vs. Guerrero, but is sure it is not selling well.
- JCC vs. Jack is very possible.
- The Ward vs. Barrera fight has been agreed to, the remaining issues have to do with Ward's contract with HBO.
- Kovalev is a cool guy with a wry sense of humor.
- Gamboa has been mentioned as a potential opponent for Francisco Vargas.
- Buy or sell Margarito fights Canelo or GGG at some point? Sell.
- Rob Brant is a prospect worth watching. Fan friendly fighting style.
- Angulo is not retired. No word on next fight.
- Bernard Hopkins still wants to fight one more time, but if he doesn't so be it.
- No word on where it will air, but Brook vs. Bizier is expected to get US programming. Lemieux's next fight likely not on TV and will be streaming on Ring magazine's website.
