Garcia: Canelo Bout Has Been Mentioned For Rios
A few days ago, Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum informed
BoxingScene.com of a possible fight scenario for 2016 .
On November 7th, WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (32-1, 12KOs) will face Brand Rios (33-2-1, 24KOs) in an HBO televised bout from the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
The winner could be in line for a lucrative opportunity against the winner of the November 21 showdown between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
Arum has spoke with Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes Canelo. De La Hoya is on board with matching his fighter against Bradley or Rios.
Robert Garcia, who trains Rios, informed BoxingScene.com that Canelo's name has been mentioned to them as a possible future opponent - if Rios wins next week.
The weight limit for such a fight would be interesting. Cotto-Canelo takes place at a catch-weight of 155-pounds. Garcia does not appear comfortable with Rios going up that high, but something between welterweight and junior middleweight might work.
"Canelo has been mentioned, but Canelo has a very dangerous fight. That fight is not easy, so we don't know if Cotto will beat Canelo. And we don't know if Cotto will be available because Cotto just left Top Rank," Garcia told BoxingScene.com.
"[Manager] Cameron [Dunkin] has mentioned a Canelo possibility. There are other welterweights that Top Rank has and there a lot of junior middleweights that Top Rank has,
that maybe at a catch-weight would make a lot of sense."
