square means that your hips are squared to your opponent. i think ward was out of position and went into a high guard in a panic. the disadvantage of having a high guard is that you block a lot of your peripheral vision with your gloves. ward never saw that uppercut.
canelo is a good counter puncher and i think that is going to force golovkin to have to come in a lot more tentatively.
golovkin likes to come in pushing off of his back foot hard to throw the jab and canelo is going to be waiting for it to slip it and to counter it not run from it like a lot of the guys that golovkin fights.
the motion that you make to slip the jab through the space that you have next to your right ear and over your right shoulder is the same motion that you make to throw a right hand and you can throw a counter right hand with it in one smooth motion.
the alternative way to counter a jab with a right hand is to slip the jab through the space that you have next to your left ear and over your left shoulder and come back over it with a counter right hand.
or you can make the same motion to transfer your body weight over to your front leg to load that body weight into a counter left hook.
and you can make the same motion to slip a right hand through the space that you have next to your right ear and over your right shoulder to throw a counter left hook.
the alternative way to counter a jab with a left hook is to slip the jab through the space that you have next to your left ear and over your left shoulder and throw a counter left hook with it in the same motion. alexis arguello used to like to throw the left hook this way a lot. comes out very fast because of the way that it is thrown in one smooth motion.
when you are throwing different counters from the same slipping motions you force a fighter to treat your head movement like a threat and not just a defensive move because of the way that various punches can always come out of it.
a counterpunch can make a gentleman out of anybody. canelo is always ready to slip and counter and golovkin is going to have to honor it on the way in or run into counters over and over.
when golovkin is coming in i dont think canelo is going to be running away and thats why i think that a lot of the fight is probably going to be fought in a phone booth in the center of the ring. canelo is a great combination puncher and golovkin is going to have to fight fire with fire. i think canelo takes a lot of the early rounds and probably whips golovkins head around a lot more than willie monroe with some flashy combinations.
however canelo tends to get tired and that is going to be exacerbated even more fighting this kind of fight against golovkin. canelo is a better combination puncher but golovkin is a bigger puncher and i think golovkin probably gradually takes over around the middle of the fight and towards the end of the fight wears down and knocks out canelo or just dominates each round one sidedly to a potentially controversial decision.
tough fight to pick but in a phone booth fight i like the guy with the combinations and in a canelo vs golovkin fight i like canelo to hang on and have enough rounds in the bank to take a decision.
I mentioned Ward getting caught the same the same way Boone did with Abraham he two stepped but recovered well if my memory serves me right and Froch had success with that shot too. He was literally in the same defense and at the same range. I've never been a fan of that peek a boo style he gets in at that range. I think kkkov is the tougher fight (better fighter imo) for him but I've seen ggg land that same uppercut quite a few times. I think Ward easy works him but he might have a moment with that shot.
