Though the Pacquiao-Algieri will be offered on pay-per-view in the States, it will be shown on free television in China. The infrastructure needed to offer pay-per-view in China still is being developed, and the timing wasn’t right to ask a new market to start paying to watch boxing on television.

“We thought it would not enhance the popularity we’re building in boxing,” Arum said. “We’re doing this card on free television in China, where we can reach an audience of between 300-350 million. If we were wildly successful on pay-per-view, it would be a small fraction of that. So it would be better for the overall scheme of things that we reach the largest possible audience.”
