Manny Pacquiao, left, and undefeated WBO World Welterweight champion Timothy Bradley pose during a press conference in New York to announce their upcoming rematch.

Boxing Spotlight
Manny Pacquiao in a positive, motivated mindset before rematch with Timothy Bradley

BY SANTOS A. PEREZ

The comeback performance and triumph against Brandon Rios last November enabled Manny Pacquiao to again experience the customary arm raised in victory.

Now that he is reacquainted with winning, Pacquiao seeks to avenge the first of two consecutive losses in 2012 that led to an 11-month ring absence and removed him from pound-for-pound hierarchy. The native of the Philippines will attempt to reclaim a welterweight belt with his rematch against Timothy Bradley on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

For Pacquiao, the bout against Bradley completes a 22-month wait and continues his efforts at cleansing the worst year of his career. Bradley ended Pacquiao’s World Boxing Organization reign with a controversial split decision in their first bout in June 2012.

Frustrations increased after Pacquiao was knocked out by nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez six months later.

“I’m not angry after the decision,” Pacquiao said of the first Bradley fight in a recent conference call. “The officials did their best, and no one is perfect in this world, and sometimes they make mistakes. It’s part of boxing. I wasn’t really bothered after the fight.”

Although he sees it as motivation, Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KOs) is not concerned about Bradley’s comments that Pacquiao no longer possesses the fight-finishing power which knocked out Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto in three consecutive fights. Bradley especially emphasized how Pacquiao, 35, failed to finish a smaller and defensively limited Rios.

Pacquiao, a seven-division world champion, has not stopped an opponent since his 12th-round TKO win over Cotto seven fights ago.

“The more he says it, the more it inspires me to show the hunger and the killer instinct he is talking about,” Pacquiao said. “I am not angry or disappointed about what he says to me, but I’m happy that he has told me that because it inspires me to train hard and to focus in the gym on my game plan and focus on the fight. It is a benefit for me.”

Pacquiao might not subscribe to a knockout-or-bust strategy, but Bradley’s ring approach and the fallout from the first bout’s scoring could force Pacquiao to maintain a busy and aggressive pace.

“I do not think Bradley will fight toe-to-toe with me either, so I will have to hunt him down,” Pacquiao said. “I am prepared for that. I am not going for a knockout, but if the opportunity presents itself I am going for it this time.”

Bradley (31-0, 12 KOs) displayed two different strategies in his two bouts following the first fight with Pacquiao.

Instead of using his solid boxing skills, Bradley won a tight decision and absorbed relentless shots against Ruslan Provodnikov. Bradley sustained a concussion as a result of the bout’s physical toll.

Against Marquez, Bradley utilized boxing and speed to win another close decision.

“Bradley, obviously, fought the better fight and boxed Marquez,” Pacquiao said. “I assume Marquez could not overcome Bradley’s skills and youth, and there was no [way] Bradley was going to go toe-to-toe after his battle with Ruslan Provodnikov.

“We are focusing on being more aggressive and throwing a lot of punches, and if the knockout comes, it comes. I just want to prove that I can have the hunger that it takes to get the job done.”

Ortiz undefeated

Miami resident Luis Ortiz remained unbeaten and improved his status as a heavyweight contender with his fourth-round knockout win over Monte Barrett on Thursday night in Indio, Calif.

Ortiz, a native of Cuba, is now 21-0 with 18 knockouts.

Top Rank Signs Deal With Sony For PS4 To Sponsor Upcoming Marquee Fights

Fight promoter Top Rank has signed Sony PlayStation to a wide-ranging sponsorship that will give the PS4 brand prominent placement in the upcoming Timothy Bradley-Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto-Sergio Martinez PPVs, as well as an HBO card headlined by Juan Manuel Marquez-Mike Alvarado. There also will be a presence across Top Rank’s website and in fights airing on Spanish-language television. Though neither Top Rank nor Sony Computer Entertainment America would disclose financials, the breadth and volume of assets included in the deal for fights of that level typically would exceed $1M and could approach $2M. The sponsorship, which kicks off during the lead-up to Saturday’s Pacquiao-Bradley fight in Las Vegas and runs through Top Rank events in April, May and June, includes:

* The PS4 logo on the ring mat for all three major fights, either in all four corners or at center ring. PS4 also will be on the lighting trusses atop the ring and on video boards in the arenas, as well as on broadcast features such as "tale-of-the tape" on all but the HBO card.
* Sony PlayStation trailers to run during both PPV telecasts, expected to air in more than 130 countries.
* Three 60-second spots on all live cards aired during the weekly “Solo Boxeo” show on UniMas.
* Banners and pre-roll on the TopRank.com video player and a website takeover during the lead-up to each major fight, as well as social media integration at all three fights.
* VIP floor seating for all three major fights.

Marquez fights Alvarado at the recently-renovated Forum in Inglewood, Calif., on May 17. Cotto fights Martinez at MSG on June 7.

IMPORTANT TO ADD RECOGNIZABLE BRAND: Top Rank Exec VP Lucia McKelvey, pointing to the importance of adding a recognizable brand in a high-profile category, said, “We need and value strong tier-1 brand alignment.” McKelvey: “What started out as a cold call ended up an incredible win for the boxing industry.” The deal was born of a January call from McKelvey to PlayStation Senior VP/Brand Marketing Guy Longworth. McKelvey connected with Longworth through LinkedIn, then set up a call to pitch him on the merits of boxing as a means to target young Hispanic males both inside and outside of the U.S. McKelvey and Top Rank President Todd DuBoef met with PlayStation execs in S.F., then brought Longworth to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for the press conference to kick off the Cotto-Martinez media tour in March. McKelvey presented a package that would give PS4 a large presence across Top Rank’s biggest events in a short span of time, allowing the brand to test the sport and measure results. "They love that we’re reaching the demos we reach and that it’s not saturated,” McKelvey said. “Along with the reach we offer here in the U.S., we get them into Mexico and Latin America. It’s a great brand play for them.”

I dont like this move, now I defintiely feel like the Molina Charlo thing was a Haymon move; now the motive is clear they are trying to keep black skin away from Canelo while he unify the titles and possibly think Floyd once again..................

I aint fooled.....................

if true looks like Molina will be going on another spoiling mission, guaranteed Canelo is going to look BAD!!!!!
Not a distracted Molina, he'll most likely lay down in what he knows will be his last big match, no one was supposed to touch him after rape of a minor, and he gets the second biggest ppv star.......

I could see spoiler theoretically also but this is boxing unfortunately, WWE is more real these days, especially with Taker losing:wow:

Floyd rematch will never happen.

They will be looking at the Cotto-Martinez winner or even the loser very closely for his match after Molina.

If his team can't secure either of those 2 names after the Molina fight for whatever reason, the best option is actually taking on the best fighter available
