Whether anyone in the super lightweight division wanted to admit it or not, but Josh Taylor was the man to beat.
From 2018-2022, the 32-year-old went on a run that’s seldom seen. During that stretch, Taylor scored wins against Ryan Martin, Ivan Baranchyk, Apinun Khongsong, Jack Catterall, Jose Ramirez, and Regis Prograis. All of those aforementioned fighters were undefeated by the way.
The victories that Taylor racked up allowed him to grab every world title the super lightweight division had to offer. With no one able to figure him out, Teofimo Lopez decided to try his hand.

In two warm-up bouts at 140 pounds, the former unified lightweight champ struggled, despite picking up consecutive wins.
As Lopez prepared himself to take on Taylor, he believed that he concocted the perfect game plan to take him out. He was right. Lopez was on fire all night long, blasting Taylor whenever he wanted and avoiding whatever came back in his direction. The results were what he was expecting, a wide unanimous decision.
Nowadays, Lopez (19-1, 13 KOs) is strutting around the division as happy as can be. Beating the man who beat the man now makes Lopez, the man. Subriel Matias, however, isn’t so enamored with Lopez’s skills.
The current IBF titlist isn’t willing to give anyone a leg up on him. More than anything, he’d love to face any of his fellow champions in a unification. Lopez, of course, ranks near the top of his wishlist.
Regardless of what he’s accomplished, Matias has a hard time falling for the hype. While he won’t treat Lopez flippantly, Matias (19-1, 19 KOs) isn’t willing to place him on a pedestal either. From his point of view, Lopez has earned his respect but he’s far from an elite 140-pounder.

“He’s a good fighter,” said Matias to BoxingScene.com. “But I think Teofimo is just ok.”

I said the same thing about Lopez but the Taylor fight showed me he was legit. Depending on what Haney does at 140, I would like to see that.
