Promoter Eddie Hearn has big plans for super middleweight contender Edgar Berlanga.
Berlanga began his career red hot - by scoring 16 consecutive knockouts in the very first round.
However, nothing lasts forever.
Berlanga has now gone the distance in his last four ring appearances - and showed stylistic cracks in those fights, which came against Demond Micholson, Marceo Esteban Coceres, Steve Rolls and Roamer Alexis Angulo.
Earlier this year, the Puerto Rican banger parted ways with promoter Top Rank. He would later sign a multi-fight deal with Hearn's Matchroom Boxing.
The motivated factor to sign with Hearn, is the promoter's working relationship with Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
Canelo is the undisputed world champion at 168-pounds. He's scheduled to return to the ring on May 6, when he makes a likely defense against British boxer John Ryder.
Hearn is going to build a May 2024 showdown between Berlanga and Canelo.
In order to do so, Hearn wants to place Berlanga in at least two fights to showcase his talents.
"He has that unbelievable start to his career, also a couple of injuries amid those decent performances after," Hearn said to Metro.co.uk.
"He’s ready to go in now and make a statement, he is a fantastic fighter, has a huge fanbase. He is a huge signing for our U.S. roster and the plan is for him to fight Canelo Alvarez.
"He has to prove himself as a contender for that and his next two fights should be against world level opposition to try and put himself into position for that Mexico vs Puerto Rico derby next May. That would be a huge event but he has to prove himself as a worthy challenger and that is the plan over the next six to eight months."
