Jaron Ennis Promoter Expects Spence to Vacate IBF Title, Ennis to Become Full Champion By Summer

Jaron “Boots” Ennis will finally be a world champion this summer, but it will be via fiat rather than knockout, according to his chief handler.
Ennis, the highly regarded 25-year-old welterweight contender from Philadelphia, became the interim beltholder for the IBF after he outpointed Karen Chukhadzhian last month at Capitol One Arena in Washington D.C. on the undercard of the Gervonta Davis-Hector Luis Garcia lightweight bout. The win essentially secured Ennis a shot at the legitimate titlist of the sanctioning organization, Errol Spence Jr., who also holds the WBA and WBC 147-pound belts.
Only, don’t expect the two to actually duke it out in the ring anytime soon.
Cameron Dunkin, the promoter of Ennis, says his charge will be elevated to full champion status without having to throw a punch because he believes Spence intends to vacate his belt.
“Boots is the interim champion now,” Dunkin told BoxingScene.com. “Spence, he’s obligated to fight him in 90 days.
“So, we’re gonna fight for the title, and then [the question will be] will be, does he (Spence) want to fight.’ And [the answer is], no, he will vacate [his belt], and Boots will automatically become regular champion and we’ll defend our title probably in June.”
Dunkin maintained that he thinks Spence’s days at 147 are now numbered.
“No, (he won’t fight Ennis), no,” Dunkin said. “I think he’s going to ’54. I don’t think they want Boots at all.
“At ’54 it’s perfect for the other guy (Spence). I think they’re setting up a big fight with Spence against [154-pound undisputed champion Jermell] Charlo—yes, even though they have the same trainer (Derrick James). I think so. It’s a weird business we’re living in now. Spence doesn’t really want to make ’47 anymore.”
Spence will reportedly fight Keith Thurman in a junior middleweight bout in the spring without having to give up his titles.
The 32-year-old Spence and native of Desoto, Texas, would then have a full slate of mandatory obligations to fulfill. WBA head Gilberto Mendoza told ESPN that Spence would have 60 days upon the Thurman fight to close a deal with WBO titlist Terence Crawford for the undisputed welterweight championship; but if that fails to materialize, Spence would then have to fight the winner of the WBA interim contest between Vergil Ortiz and Eimantas Stanionis set for April 29 at College Park Center in Arlington, Texas.
Dunkin said he had an encouraging meeting with Showtime Sports head Stephen Espinoza recently on planning Ennis’ next steps; Ennis’ last several fights have been featured on the premium cable network. But it was clear from their conversation, according to Dunkin, that Spence would not factor into Ennis’ immediate future.
“When I talked to Espinoza, he said he’s giving me a list of opponents and Spence wasn’t on it,” Dunkin said. “He said Ennis will defend his title in June.”
Unfortunately for the fans, Dunkin simply does not think the financial support is there to stage a Spence-Ennis fight anytime soon.
“It’s great TV, but where’s the money?” Dunkin said. “They’re not gonna pay that kind of money — whoever — we’re not signed with anybody. Is somebody gonna call me and say you want to fight Spence? Only [Spence’s advisor Al] Haymon, [promoter] Tom Brown, Stephen Espinoza.”
Recently, Dunkin lost one of his highly regarded clients, rising junior welterweight Brandun Lee, after their contract expired last year. Lee subsequently signed an advisory deal with Haymon, the founder of Premier Boxing Champions, which showcases its vast roster of fighters, including Spence and Thurman, on Showtime, its exclusive network partner. Ennis’ situation is unique because while he regularly appears on Showtime cards, he is not a Haymon-advised fighter.
Dunkin brushed off any suggestion that Ennis (30-0, 27 KOs) could follow a similar trajectory.
“One thing has nothing to do with the other. All I know is that I’m fine with my guy,” Dunkin said. “We got the interim title and anybody who wants to fight for that has to come to us. They got 90 days and we’ll push it on them if we have to.
“But they’re not going to come after Boots Ennis.”

Gerald Washington Appoints Malik Scott As New Trainer, No Longer Tied With PBC

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – At the age of 40, Gerald Washington is looking to resurrect his career for one last run.
The 11-year veteran heavyweight contender has appointed Deontay Wilder coach Malik Scott as his new head trainer.
Washington was last trained by Hall of Fame fighter and coach Buddy McGirt for his most recent bout against Ali Demirezen in January 2022.
In that fight, Washington was ahead on two of the three scorecards by one point but was fading late, eventually suffering an 8th-round TKO loss in a bour that was scheduled to go 10 rounds.
It marked the fifth loss in Washington’s (20-5-1, 13 KOs) last seven fights dating back to 2017 – all via stoppages against the likes of Deontay Wilder, Jarrell Miller, Adam Kownacki, Charles Martin, and Demirezen.
Washington has been a Premier Boxing Champions staple in recent years, but in an interview with BoxingScene.com, he said he’s now a free agent.
“I don’t have any contractual obligations right now. I’m looking for a fight – anybody, anywhere,” said Washington. “I have to get back into the mix. I have to make some moves. I want to finish off with some big fights, get some good wins for myself and see where that takes me.”
Washington – a former college football player at USC – recently almost got thrown back into the fray. He said he was one of the opponents considered for Anthony Joshua before the former two-time heavyweight champion ended up signing a deal to fight Jermaine Franklin on April 1.
“The best version of myself is yet to come. I’m working to put this thing together to go out there and give it another go. I’m willing to fight anyone,” said Washington. “I understand my position and where I am at. I understand what I need to do. I’m not worried about anybody. I want to get in there and handle business. Anyone who can help me get some action, that’s what I’m looking for.”
Washington and Scott are training at the Brickhouse Boxing Club in North Hollywood, California.
“Malik has always been a guy I respected and looked up to and learned a lot from,” said Washington. “He’s always given me good work and great advice. I wanted to work with someone I knew and trusted.”

Baltimore boxing champion Gervonta Davis pleaded guilty on Thursday to fourtraffic offenses in connection to a hit-and-run that injured four people — including a pregnant woman — in 2020.
Davis, 28, was set to stand trial in Baltimore Circuit Court before taking the plea agreement. Circuit Judge Althea M. Handy will determine the punishment for the crime at sentencing on May 5.

On Nov. 5, 2020, Davis was at a club celebrating his birthday and latest victory in the ring. He was driving a 2020 Lamborghini Urus SUV on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at about 1:50 a.m. when he ran a red light and hit a 2004 Toyota Solara, Baltimore Police reported.
The car was “destroyed,” according to police. Four people were taken to the hospital, police reported, while Davis left in another car that showed up on the scene.
Circuit Judge Melissa M. Phinn previously rejected a proposed plea agreement in the case that called for Davis to serve no jail time in the crash.

Davis is a West Baltimore native who’s nicknamed “Tank” and has a perfect 28-0 boxing record with 26 knockouts. He’s the current World Boxing Association lightweight world champion.

This is a developing story. Check back later for more information.
Tank is lucky the original judge that rejected his plea is off the case. No jail time for him.

Eubank opts for Smith rematch

Chris Eubank Jr. announced that he has exercised his right to an immediate rematch with British countryman Liam Smith, who stunningly knocked Eubank out in the fourth round in an upset in their high-profile middleweight fight on Jan. 21 at sold-out AO Arena in Manchester, England.

"(Tuesday) morning I activated the rematch clause via my lawyers & sent to my promoters Wasserman,” Eubank posted to social media. “Happy Valentines Day Liam Smith.”

Former junior middleweight world titlist Smith (33-3-1, 20 KOs), 34, responded to the post with by writing “Happy Valentine's Day. See you soon.” The post was accompanied by a photo of Eubank (32-4, 23 KOs), 33, on his way to the canvas when Smith knocked him down.

The fight, which was on Sky Sports Boxing Office as a pay-per-view headliner in the United Kingdom and on DAZN in the United States, grew into a major event after Eubank’s hugely hyped fight against Conor Benn scheduled for Oct. 8 was canceled a few days beforehand when Benn’s failed drug test results for a banned substance were made public.

There is no set date or venue yet for the rematch
