Ratings Revealed For UFC 276 Prelims On ABC/ESPN
This is the difference between Boxing media and MMA media.
UFC on ABC prelims did an abysmal 900 something K, their ratings on ABC have been on a tailspin. Lower each time.
These guys in this article added up the ESPN ratings which was simulcast and stamped it at “1.8 Million” and spun this as some sort of success, when it’s literally the exact opposite!
(which is still terrible if you consider you’re simucasting on ABC which even I have for free north of the border and ESPN!).
When PBC on FOX was peaking and pulling in almost 3 million, boxing media said “anything can be that high on FOX”. Even the thurman barrios prelims on fox hit over 900k this year and no one said a thing, in fact they were always negative about it.
UFC’s deal with ESPN is roughly 6x bigger than Top Rank’s deal with ESPN. They force the ads, they force the narrative and they force garbage fighters and garbage fights because they have to. Yet Top Rank is still neck and neck with the UFC in ratings, and recently has been smoking them. Where’s the return on investment for ESPN with the UFC?
The double standard and expectations between the two sports is insane.
ESPN + PPV numbers are supposed to be hard to obtain since they’re digital numbers, yet it never stops Dana from spitting out a number and the media running with it like it’s true, nobody ever questions the UFC PPV numbers, only boxing. Ontop of that the prelim rating numbers for every card to reported buy numbers ratio never make any sense. Ontop of that they have only had a handful of cards with actual crowds and are still in the Apex center (a training facility, think the showtime and top rank pandemic cards). Are they trying to hide the fact that they are so watered down with cards that most of them would barely have any fans? They are forced to do 12 PPV cards a year, and almost a card every week for either ESPN or ESPN +. I’m willing to bet the non PPV card crowds would look very very sparse on tv.
