The team surrounding Ryan Garcia hope to pick up where the unbeaten lightweight left off in more ways than one.
Garcia returns to the ring for the first time in 15 months when he faces Ghana’s Emmanuel Tagoe atop an April 9 DAZN show from Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The fight is the first since Garcia’s off-the-canvas, seventh-round knockout of England’s Luke Campbell last January 2 in Dallas.
Shortly after the win came chatter of Garcia possibly facing unbeaten rising superstar Gervonta ‘Tank' Davis (26-0, 24KOs), though never evolving beyond attention-grabbing headlines. Garcia’s return has brought the matchup back to the surface, though Davis still has to first defend his WBA ‘World’ lightweight title versus Rolando Romero (14-0, 12KOs) on May 28 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. One week later comes the undisputed lightweight championship between lineal/WBA “Super”/IBF/WBO king George Kambosos Jr. (20-0, 15KOs) and WBC titlist Devin Haney (27-0, 15KOs).
The fights leave the belts tied up at least until the second half of the year. Golden Boy Promotions hopes to land at least one option for Garcia (21-0, 18KOs) by that point.
“The vision is to become a world champion this year,” Oscar De La Hoya, Garcia’s promoter and Golden Boy chairman insisted during a recent media workout held at Garcia’s facility in Chula Vista, California. “You have Kambosos fighting Haney. We’re going to look at the winner very carefully. Hopefully we get the winner. Or maybe we go a different route. Maybe we start negotiations with Tank Davis. I’m waiting for his promoter Al Haymon to give me a call and why not.”
“But first things’ first, first is April 9. From one promoter to another, let’s make this happen.”
Garcia was in position to challenge for Haney’s WBC title following his win over Campbell. The Victorville, California native opted to go another route, though that option didn’t pan out. Garcia was due to face Javier Fortuna last July, only to bow out of the fight and the sport as a whole for a mental health reset. A planned November 27 clash with Joseph ‘JoJo’ Diaz fell through once Garcia suffered a wrist injury requiring surgery and physical rehabilitation.
Armed with a clean bill of health, Garcia hopes to make up for lost time beginning with the Tagoe fight. Golden Boy doesn’t have any intention to nibble around the edges with the biggest name in its stable.
“He’s ready. He’s been ready,” De La Hoya believes. “Everything happens for a reason. Once he crowns himself world champion, the sky’s the limit.”
