Boxing could be the biggest sport in the world if it wasn’t so damn disorganized, I’m convinced. When it is at its’ best there is nothing like it as far as the technical aspect, drive/heart, glory, personalities and potential star power.
Can you imagine if any other top sport had their stars/teams randomly split from every position split with other entities and networks?
Like imagine the top NBA team not being able to face the second best NBA team in the finals because that team was tied to another network, so the top NBA team has to settle for like the 7th best team in the league or something to determine the champion. The power of the “league” and branding of the NBA would be gone.
Or if ESPN had the teams with the best point guards in basketball, but NBC had the teams with the best front court players.
Boxing is still a top 4 sport in America when it comes to non white fans despite all the confusion.
Basketball, Football, Baseball, Boxing among minorities in the US. I would even put it ahead of Baseball but I will be conservative so people don’t think I’m reaching (but the reality is yes it’s ahead of baseball on this list).
I’m just glad we are getting some mainstream coverage still with the ESPN and FOX deals, yet we’re not even putting on anywhere close to the best fights right now. We saw a sample of the type of buzz a Wilder/Fury and Teo/Loma can have. Even that Tank knockout of Leo was buzzing in the mainstream with Lebron commenting and the number one trending video on all of Youtube for that day. Need that consistently, it’s doable.
Despite the slow start to 2021 and all these youtube and old boxers announcing shows and PPVs....My gut is telling me we are going to see some huge fights in the next 18 months. There is just tooooooo much high level talent right now through almost every division that is rising and at it’s peak for legacy type matchups to not be created, even if it’s just by default.
