Mike Tyson announced this week that he’d be fighting again in an exhibition match on Memorial Day weekend at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
The central piece of information missing from the declaration, however, was his upcoming opponent.
After squaring off against Roy Jones Jr. in November, Tyson soon shifted his attention to former archrival Evander Holyfield, and both camps have since been in advanced discussions and negotiations.
“They haven’t sent me any of the papers yet,” Holyfield told BoxingScene.com after learning of Tyson’s announcement. “We don’t have it lined up yet. Once we get the papers right, we’ll come out and announce it together. He could be leaning on [fighting] anybody. We’re supposed to fight in an exhibition.”
If they have optimal time to promote their fight, Holyfield said the trilogy could be more lucrative than their original meetings in 1996 and 1997, both of which were victories for Holyfield.
“We’d be fighting against ourselves to put on the show in a hurry [on Memorial Day weekend],” said Holyfield. “We could break our previous PPV records if it’s done right. We need to properly promote the event and get the public excited about it to make it great like it could be.”
The 58-year-old Holyfield has previously expressed that the third meeting with Tyson, 54, would generate close to $100 million. The first fight between Tyson and Holyfield generated 1.59 million PPV buys, while the rematch yielded 1.99 million PPV purchases.
Holyfield said the only reason the fight would not be made is if Tyson changes his mind and goes in another direction.
“I don’t have to do it. I choose to do it because I feel that it will work for me, and not against me,” said Holyfield. “I’ve trained enough through the years to be ready. I shadow box, hit the bags and pads. But no sparring yet. Nobody is swinging at me. No matter how hard or slow I hit the bag, it doesn’t hit me back.”
