Trying to get some of that PBC money
Against who? Pascal, Jack and Browne? None of them are big draws and by beating them he wouldn't prove he is a top guy in the division. 175 isn't one of PBC's better divisions. Pascal and Jack are at the tail end of their careers and it seems like Browne won't be a world-beater.

Beterbiev-Meng: Top Rank Claims Promotional Rights
By Jake Donovan

Published On Thu Jan 9, 2020, 03:35 PM EST

Artur Beterbiev no longer has to worry about making a personal compromise for the sake of going through with his next fight.

The unbeaten World light heavyweight champion will now get to call the shots for his next title defense, which is due to come in early spring versus mandatory challenger Fanlong Meng. Promotional rights for the bout have landed in the hands of Top Rank Inc., Beterbiev’s promoter after Rejoy Group and Longjoy Sports defaulted on the original terms of the purse bid.

Journal de Montreal's Mathieu Boulay was the first to report the development.

A purse bid hearing held at International Boxing Federation (IBF) headquarters on December 30 saw Roc Nation Sports’ Dino Duva—Meng’s stateside promoter—submit a massive bid of $1.9 million on behalf of Andrew Lu’s Rejoy Group to secure promotional rights for the ordered title fight.

Terms of the hearing called for the winning bidder to place a non-refundable 10% deposit of the total purse amount at the time of the purse bid, with another 10% deposit to be submitted no later than five (5) business days later.

That time frame has come and gone with such terms being honored, which nullifies the winning bid. As such, it places the rights back in the hands of Top Rank Inc., who submitted a bid of $1.315 million at the time of the December 30 session. BoxingScene.com has learned that plans call for Beterbiev (15-0, 15KOs)—a two-time Olympian for his native Russia who is now based in Canada—to defend his title in late March either in Quebec City or Montreal.

It’s a drastic switch from Beterbiev—a devout Muslim—mulling the possibility of having to travel to China, in light of its government’s accused ethnic cleansing of Uighur Muslims, roughly one million of whom are currently being held in mass detention in the Xinjiang province.

With the latest development comes a sigh of relief, as it is now Beterbiev who will presumably enjoy hometown advantage for his first fight since becoming a unified titlist and lineal light heavyweight champion. The 34-year old knockout artist—who has stopped all 15 pro opponents to date—surged to the top of the 175-pound mountain following a 10th round knockout of previously unbeaten Oleksandr Gvozdyk in their unification clash last October in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Overall, Beterbiev will make the fourth overall defense of his IBF title, which he claimed in a 12th round stoppage of Enrico Koelling in November 2017. The bout marked the lone time in his career in which Beterbiev has been extended that deep in a prizefight. Wedged in between his two title-claiming wins were knockout victories over Callum Johnson and Radivoje Kalajdzic.

The latter served as an ESPN-televised headliner this past May five months prior to laying claim as the best light heavyweight on the planet following his stoppage win over Gvozdyk in October, also on ESPN. His title defense versus China’s Meng (16-0, 10KOs) will likely be carried on an ESPN platform, be it linear TV or on its ESPN+ streaming service.

Either way, Top Rank gets its wish to stage this defense in Canada, to where Beterbiev relocated upon turning pro in 2013, one year after the second of two Olympic tours for his native Russia at the amateur heavyweight limit in 2012 London.

Those same games saw Meng compete in the light heavyweight division for his native China, where his handlers hoped to bring this particular fight. Meng dropped a decision to eventual Bronze medalist Yamaguchi Falcao in the 2012 London Olympics, though not turning pro for another three years.

It’s been a rapid race to the top for the 31-year old southpaw, who worked his way to the mandatory position by his 15th pro fight following a 12-round win over fellow unbeaten contender Adam Deines this past June in Macao. The title eliminator took place as part of the annual IBF convention, with the promise of a title fight taking place no later than the 1st quarter of 2020.

With the patience of allowing Betetbiev an interim bout now comes the opportunity to challenge for two major titles. Only now, it comes on the terms of the defending champion.

IBF calling for the interim...interesting

Abdukahorov, Lipinets Invited To Contend For IBF Interim Title

By Jake Donovan

Published On Thu Jan 9, 2020, 06:26 PM EST

The opportunity won’t come in time for a fight date once teased to house their fight, but Kudratillo Abdukakhorov and Sergey Lipinets will have the opportunity to move one step closer to a welterweight title.

BoxingScene.com has learned that the International Boxing Federation (IBF) is in the process of ordering an interim title fight, with the winner to land as a challenger in waiting for unified welterweight titlist Errol Spence Jr. A letter has been sent to representatives for Abdukakhorov and Lipinets, both of whom will have five (5) days accept the sanctioning body’s offer to challenge for the interim title.

Sources with knowledge of the situation have alerted BoxingScene.com that both parties are interested in such a fight. Once they both officially accept the offer, a 30-day negotiation period will be ordered by the IBF for the two sides to come to terms.

Uzbekistan’s Abdukakhorov (17-0, 9KOs) is managed by Vikram Swapragasam and promoted by Top Rank, Inc. Lipinets—a Kazakhstan-born former 140-pound titlist now based out of California—fights for manager Alex Vaysfeld and proudly under adviser Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) banner, for which he will be represented in forthcoming negotiations by TGB Promotions.

Such a bout was once teased to take place on the undercard of the February 22 rematch between unbeaten heavyweight titlist Deontay Wilder (42-0-1, 41KOs) and top-rated heavyweight Tyson Fury (29-0-1, 20KOs), but with those plans abandoned due to the lack of clarity of the exact stakes of such a fight.

Abdukakhorov has long served as the mandatory challenger to the IBF strap which Spence (26-0, 21KOs) claimed in a May 2017 knockout win over Errol Spence. The unbeaten Texan has since added the World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight title following a spirited 12-round win over Shawn Porter in their unification bout and Fight of the Year contender last September.

Shortly after the win, however, Spence survived a horrific scare after suffering non life-threatening injuries sustained in a single car crash last October in downtown Dallas. The 29-year old was ejected from his sports car, which was totaled in the wreck, and spent six days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) before being released and subsequently charged with a single misdemeanor count of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI).

Abdukakhorov took a risky stay busy fight last October, outpointing former welterweight titlist Luis Collazo in an ESPN-televised bout from Philadelphia. The 26-year old Uzbek was prepared to take another voluntary fight while awaiting word on Spence’s status, but with plans put on hold once the possibility arose of fighting for an interim or even full version of the title.

Spence announced last December his intention to return to the ring this summer. Awaiting him will be two mandatory title defenses, with medical records indicating he should be fully fit to fight by no later than July.

The medical status was key in an interim title being made available by the IBF, with Abdukakhorov first in line as the sanctioning body’s highest-rated contender.

Lipinets (16-1, 12KOs) fits into the picture as the next-highest rated contender. The no-nonsense former 140-pound titlist has sought to make his way back to the title scene ever losing his strap in a 12-round decision to Mikey Garcia last March.

Three wins have followed, including a 10th round knockout of former two-division title claimant Lamont Peterson in their Fight-of-the-Year level war this past March. He’s since followed with a two-round wipeout of Jayar Inson, a late replacement for an ill John Molina Jr. last July in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In the event Abdukakhorov and Lipinets both accept the IBF offer and come to terms, the two will likely collide in the spring. While the winner is guaranteed a path to the full title, it won’t ensure a straightaway shot at Spence. Due to the agreed upon rotation between sanctioning bodies, the WBC will be next in line.

Still, it puts a pair of generally avoided contenders in Abdukakhorov and Lipinets in a much better position than ever before to make a run at the top level of the talent-rich and lucrative welterweight division.

Rumors that BJS and Canelo is almost a done deal..
That's a good opponent but wondering why he chooses BJS over Callum Sith as an opponent. Imo Canelo beats both but BJS makes for an ugly ass fight while the Smith one would be more interesting with Canelo possibly delivering a knockout.
