ATLANTA – Leo Santa Cruz just might get his wish.
Santa Cruz repeatedly stated before and after his last fight that he wants to challenge Gervonta Davis next. Davis reciprocated interest in boxing Santa Cruz next immediately after his 12th-round, technical-knockout victory over Yuriorkis Gamboa on Saturday night at State Farm Arena.
“I’m all for it,” Davis told BoxingScene.com about boxing Santa Cruz. “You know, again, ain’t no safety on this glock. Whoever want it could get it. I believe I got the best team in boxing. I’m thankful. I’m grateful. You know, I’m 25 years old. … My cup never full. I’m always willing to learn and things like that. Any big fighters that’s willing to fight me, you know, on this side, then I’m all for it. Let’s get it.”
Facing Santa Cruz could require Davis to move back down from the lightweight limit of 135 pounds to the junior lightweight maximum of 130. Santa Cruz just jumped up from featherweight (126 pounds) to junior lightweight (130) for his last fight, a 12-round, unanimous-decision defeat of Miguel Flores on November 23 in Las Vegas.
Santa Cruz told BoxingScene.com last month that he’d be willing to move up another division to face Davis at lightweight in his next fight. That’d give Davis even more of an advantage over Santa Cruz than if they were to fight at 130 pounds, though.
Baltimore’s Davis says he can still make 130 pounds comfortably, but he was 1¼ pounds overweight on his first attempt at weighing in Friday for his debut as a full-fledged lightweight. The 25-year-old Davis eventually came in below the lightweight limit (134½ pounds) for his victory over the 38-year-old Gamboa.
Leonard Ellerbe, CEO for the Floyd Mayweather-owned company that promotes Davis, said Saturday night that Santa Cruz would be a suitable opponent for Davis’ debut as a pay-per-view headliner in 2020.
“[Santa Cruz] wants the fight,” Ellerbe said, “and we’re gonna see if we can make it happen.”
The 31-year-old Santa Cruz (37-1-1, 19 KOs), of Rosemead, California, definitely would be an underdog versus Davis (23-0, 22 KOs). The four-division champion claims he is willing to take that risk because he has grown tired of criticism for his level of opposition in recent years.
“I want a big fight,” Santa Cruz told BoxingScene.com last month. “People are thinking that I’m scared of those fighters. I want to fight Gervonta Davis to prove that I’m not scared of nobody.”
