Jacobs-Chavez Moving To 12/20, MGM Grand In Las Vegas

The Daniel Jacobs-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight has a new date and site.
Multiple sources have informed BoxingScene.com that Jacobs-Chavez now will headline a card December 20 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Their fight, which will mark Jacobs’ debut as a full-fledged super middleweight, initially was targeted to take place December 13 at an undetermined venue in Texas.
The deal wasn’t finalized as of Tuesday afternoon, but barring unforeseen obstacles it’ll be completed soon. An announcement by DAZN, which will stream the Jacobs-Chavez card, likely will be made by the end of this week.
The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger first reported the change in date from December 13 to December 20.
The Brooklyn-bred Jacobs, 32, will try to bounce back against Chavez from his 12-round, unanimous-decision defeat to Canelo Alvarez five months ago. Mexico’s Alvarez (52-1-2, 35 KOs) defended the WBA and WBC middleweight titles and won the IBF belt from Jacobs in their 160-pound title unification match May 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Jacobs (35-3, 29 KOs) decided after that defeat to move up to the super middleweight limit of 168 pounds because it had become extremely difficult for the former champion to make the middleweight maximum of 160.
The 33-year-old Chavez (51-3-1, 33 KOs, 1 NC) has fought just once since Alvarez dominated him in their 12-round super middleweight match in May 2017 at T-Mobile Arena. That lone appearance resulted in a first-round knockout of Colombian veteran Evert Bravo (25-11-1, 19 KOs) on August 10 in San Juan de los Lagos, Mexico.
Chavez weighed in at 175¼ pounds for his easy victory over Bravo, slightly above the light heavyweight limit. His loss to Alvarez required Chavez to get down to a contracted catch weight of 164½ pounds.
In the bout before Alvarez beat him, Chavez came in at exactly 168 pounds for a 10-round, unanimous-decision victory over Germany’s Dominik Britsch (34-3-1, 12 KOs). Chavez will enter the Jacobs bout having fought just twice within the three years since he beat Britsch in December 2016 in Monterrey, Mexico.
