Miguel Berchelt, Pedraza-Zepeda in The Works For Fury-Wallin
By Ryan Burton
WBC super featherweight champion Miguel “Alacrán” Berchelt (36-1) has advised BoxingScene.com that his next title defense will likely come on the Tyson Fury-Otto Wallin undercard in Las Vegas on September 14th. The fight card will take place at the T-Mobile Arena.
When Top Rank chairman Bob Arum announced the Fury-Wallin fight taking place on Mexican Independence Day weekend - a date that Canelo Alvarez traditionally fights on - he stated that he would fill out the card with Mexican fighters.
Berchelt, who lives in Mérida, México, said that they are currently looking at potential opponents.
As far as a fight against unbeaten former featherweight champion Oscar Valdez, Berchelt said that fight wouldn't be happening next. Valdez has had trouble making 126 pounds and recently relinquished his WBO title an announced his move up to the super featherweight division.
“That fight won’t be in September. I don’t believe that fight will happen until next year,” Berchelt told BoxingScene.com.
Sources have also advised BoxingScene.com that a fight pitting former two-division champion Jose “Sniper” Pedraza (26-2) of Puerto Rico against former title challenger Jose “Chon” Zepeda (30-2) is also nearly finalized for the Fury-Wallin card.
Zepeda, who is of a Mexican decent, gave unified super lightweight champion Jose Ramirez all he could handle in a majority decision loss in February. Pedraza is 4-1 since signing with Top Rank with his only loss coming against Vasiliy Lomachenko. He is looking to win a world title in a third weight division.
