WBO super welterweight champion Jaime Munguia had a smorgasbord of options before him for his third fight of 2019, including
Canelo Alvarez, Gennadiy Golovkin, long-discussed foe
Jessie Vargas, or previous opponent Dennis Hogan. With Canelo still juggling his options after losing his IBF belt,
Golovkin being ordered to face Sergiy Derevyanchenko, the Vargas talks stalling, and
Hogan gearing up to fight Erickson Lubin, however, he’s had to look elsewhere.
Zona ESPN’s Fernando Beltran claims Munguia will be the first major Mexican fighter actually competing on Mexican Independence Day weekend, facing Ghana’s Patrick Allotey on September 14th in Carson, California’s Dignity Health Sports Park.
Ryan Garcia’s
recently announced bout with Avery Sparrow will serve as the co-feature on
DAZN. This is despite Garcia’s insistence that he compete in a main event.
Allotey (40-3, 30 KO), the WBO #12 super welterweight, doesn’t figure to pose a threat. He’s lost every time he’s fought quality opposition, suffering knockout defeats to Charles Manyuchi and Patrick Teixeira alongside a decision loss to Kanat Islam. He also stands three inches shorter than Munguia (33-0, 26 KO), just to complete the mismatch.
Of course, a mismatch might be what Munguia’s image needs right now. Once the talk of the town after brutalizing Sadam Ali for the belt and dominating Liam Smith in his first defense, his technical limitations have become increasingly apparent, most notably in his questionable decision over the aforementioned Hogan in April.
Considering his size, the battle with the scale will probably be more competitive than the one with Allotey.
