If Thurman vs PAC happens, I’m not necessarily convinced that this equates to Porter vs Spence happening.
Team Porter could be like, let me just fight the winner of Thurman/PAC. He would have a better chance of landing that fight then Spence due to being perceived as the easier fight.
I really hope that I’m wrong, but I understood how this business works.
From a technical/theoretical standpoint, you may be correct. But from a practical standpoint, not so much.
Porter can't afford to sit and wait for the winner of the Pac/Thurman fight. Pac is a part time fighter and with Thurman has a track record of fighting like one. It's not worth sitting and waiting for a fight you're not guaranteed to get.
Right now, Spence has the all the juice. His stock is higher than it's ever been. PBC has to capitalize on this momentum and get him the best fight possible/feasible next. That's Porter.
Porter isn't going to want to fight Spence unless the money is right. But with the success of the Spence/Garcia PPV, now that makes a Spence/Porter fight more feasible because you can risk more to get the fight made while pleasing all parties from a monetary standpoint. Should Spence vs Porter be a PPV fight? Absolutely not! But that fight wasn't going to get made without out it. And a Spence/Porter fight won't happen without PPV because they won't be able to give Porter the guarantees he's seeking on regular TV that would convince him to take that fight. And with the success of Spence/Garcia, it will make PBC more likely to take that chance.
Also keep in mind that right now Porter's stock at 147 is at an all time low. He barely escaped with his belt vs Ugas in a fight most people felt he lost. And not only that, he once again struggled to make weight. This has been a reoccurring theme as well. To the point where it's now a legit risk every fight going forward. Who's to say that The Porters aren't cognizant of this? Maybe they know his time at 147 is up, and that he likely takes a beating vs Spence, but for the guarantees he'll get that he's willing to cash out and go out with a big?
Porter has to take the Spence fight if the money is right, because there's no guarantee he 1) Gets the Thurman/Pac winner anytime soon of at all 2) Is even able to make weight again 3) Doesn't get upset in his next fight against a lesser opponent and loses his belt + a final opportunity for 1 final payday (because let's be real, Porter's value is the belt attached to him. Once that's off his waist/shoulder, he's not worth much)
