Earlier today TASS reported that WBA Light Heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (14-0, 11) [дмитрий бивол] is set to return in December do make the next defense of his title.
The Kyrgyzstan born Russian based 27 year old, who has notched wins over Sullivan Barrera and Isaac Chilemba this year, hasn't got a nailed down opponent but it does seem like there are two fighters that Bivol and his team have in mind.
The most notable of the two men Bivol was wanting to fight was former WBC Super Middleweight champion Badou Jack (22-1-3, 13). Bivol revealed that talks had taken place to fight the American based Swedish-Gambian hadn't hadn't yielded any results yet, but it does seem like a deal is still being looked at.
The other name mentioned was American fighter Joe Smith Jr (24-2, 20), who is best known for back-to-back stoppage wins in 2016 over Andrzej Fonfara and Bernard Hopkins. His run of big wins came to an end in July 2017 when he was beaten by Sullivan Barrera, but he did drop Barrera before losing a decision to the Cuban. Since then he has bounced back with a win in June.
It seems like Bivol is open to facing Smith due to the fact many of the top Light Heavyweights are already booked up with bouts. The likes of Eleider Alvarez, who will be facing off in a rematch with Sergey Kovalev, Adonis Stevenson and Oleksandr Gvozdyk, who will be battling eah other in December, and Artur Beterbiev, who fights in October against Callum Johnson, are all booked up and unavailable for Bivol. With that in mind Smith is certainly not a terrible opponent to keep Bivol busy.
