Jose Ramirez's First Defense Targeted For Ballpark in Fresno

So what's in store for newly minted WBC junior welterweight titlist Jose Ramirez (22-0, 16 KOs), who won the title by out-pointing Amir Imam this past weekend in New York?

Well, a homecoming bout in his home region.

"We're looking at that ballpark (in Fresno), Rick Mirigian has made an arrangement at a baseball field and do his first title defense this summer," said Bob Arum, who's company Top Rank represents the 25-year old native of Avenal, California, which lies in the Central Valley.

The venue being discussed is Chuckchansi Park, the home of the Triple A affiliate of the Houston Astros.

Mirigian, the tireless adviser of Ramirez, told BoxingScene.com in a recent interview - "I've got a June date held and I've got dates held in July and August at the Save Mart Arena. So all the fun starts tomorrow. I get to smile for one day and I'll be back at it tomorrow to piece everything together, laying out everything."

Ramirez has played before to big crowds at the Save Mart Arena in the past. As for the ballpark, Mirigian states - "We can put like 16,500, 17,000 in there with the people on the field."

At the moment Ramirez has a mandatory challenger in the form of dangerous Regis Prograis, who was ringside last Saturday to watch Ramirez win the title at the Hulu Theater of Madison Square Garden in an ESPN televised bout.

Two weeks ago, Prograis destroyed former unified champion Julius Indongo in the second round of a final eliminator to pick up the WBC's interim-title.

Pursuant to a previous order that was issued by the sanctioning body, Ramirez and Prograis should now fight.

Arum has already told BoxingScene.com that he would like to stage a doubleheader with both boxers in separate fights - and then have them face each other.
