Inside the game or the lobby between matches? Two different things.
To type in the game, press T to toggle the chat box, if you press "j", "k" or "l" it lets you type to a certain audience: everyone(ALL), squad and team. Mess around with it.

use the J key to type your message to ALL, K for team and L for squad.

I have that exact CPU OC'd to 3.9ghz fresh off a 23hour torture test stable no errors with a 7870 OC'd and I can't even geting those frames on low. It's the same no matter what settings I use. This beta is terrible. It's hard to you know test something that barely freaking works.

With all due respect friend, that CPU and GPU are somewhat outdated for this game.
I highly recommend that 8350 8core processor. I have it OC'd to 4.3. But my graphics card cannot fukking keep up as well.
That being said, you are right about using it for testing. Dice acknowledged today that there are some performance issues with the beta.
gpu is far from out dated. I can play BF3 on high/ultra and maintain close to 60fps at 1080P.
I have an i5-3570K CPU and a 7850 2GB card and I was enjoying my performance.
Now, I'm a console gamer so even though it wasn't locked at 60fps it was still shytting on what I'm used to.
Did you try any Domination matches to see if it was any better?
I saw a jump in DOM compared to Conquest. And honestly I didn't see that much of a difference in framerate when switching between Auto, Medium, Low etc so I just left it on Auto because that looked the best visually

I just now booted up BF3 and had a frame counter(MSI OSD) and my frame rate was like 50-60fps on a 48 man match, ultra settings at 1080P WITH sweetfx applied.
That shyt looked godly, even better than this beta. I was being considerate before I even checked the game thinking it was on high but nah it was on ultra. 
Yea I'm not going back to this beta until it's patched up or at least until retail.

The beta is hit or miss. I tried different servers and it's a mess; Understandable but annoying nonetheless.
