Battle rap being on the news is a double edged sword

The exposure is great for business

But just as easily all it takes is a handful of social media warriors to get offended and ruin a TON of sponsor relationships for battle rap

The same way that dipshyt girl was acting in Bodied once she saw all the wild shyt nikkas say

Mainstream commercial rap was too big a business to fail by the time the outrage era started, can't fully say the same about battle rap

Well battle rap is seen as a part of hip hop, so it can be protected just by association

:gucci: Bruh rap is protected by multi million dollar labels and streaming services

Battle rap has not attached itself to that machine at all, what labels do you see protecting battlerap? The culture had to go to caffeine to get a respectable bag.

These labels barely be in touch with bubbling artists you think they give a fukk about something as niche as battlerap?

What I mean is that battle rap will get a pass for being offensive like Rap music does because folks are accustomed to the genre of Rap being like that

I wouldn’t be so sure that battle rap gets a pass for its offensive material.

With more exposure, comes more people who have very little or zero knowledge of battling, especially the subject matter.

Case in point:

I remember visiting a relative’s crib some years back while they were working at home, and decided to put something on to entertain myself since they were pre-occupied.

Cued up a Rum Nitty battle and when he said his catchphrase “kill yourself”, my relative (who is a self-proclaimed hip-hop head) said “Wow. That was unnecessary.” :picard:

Because they were unfamiliar with battle rap and Rum Nitty in particular, they didn’t understand that he didn’t mean what he said in a literal sense. So I had to break it down for them.

And that’s just one example I’ve personally experienced. Now imagine an influx of new “fans” or curious individuals coming in not knowing where to start.

The likelihood of someone taking something out of context and posting it on social media, stirring shyt up and causing “outrage” increases. I’ve seen it happen already with battle rap clips and it’s bound to happen even more in the future.
