While I agree you have to keep recruiting players that have a chip on their shoulder/something to prove, it’s difficult to rely on finding diamonds in the rough on a routine basis.

Plus the way Mel’s being paid he has to raise the recruiting bar. ~2-3 years ago we were losing out to Cincy for 3* players. I trust Mel’s ability to handle the dynamics of higher level recruiting, dealing w/ the different personalities, hitting the portal, etc, MUCH more than how someone conservative like Dantonio could.
